Spam maps (nothing but terran planets and like 90 of em) no strat involved?

to start off im a guy that has to make a point. so yea ill fight for my point to be noted.

any way today i played a map that someone made and had an arguement that his map (which had 6 people 90 planets all terran planets and only about 1 string of planets going to the sun then down the string to another player meaning theres only 1 way in and 1 way out) involed little to no stratagy beside ok i can now spam my units.
 
i have very litle knoledge of the games current strats so can someone. eather support or oppose my opinon. cuase the only thing he said is the there are strats but only there faster and bigger....

Well there are some things that you can classify as strategy.

- Putting phase jump portals at other planets on other side of star system will make things a bit different.

- Learning how to scout well will allow you to control the center for longer.

-controling the center using different technique's

and a few others.


No real big strats but there are some.

It has less strategy, certainly, but there's probably some. It is just a dumbed down version of the game, though; think money maps in SC.

Oh then why didnt you just say so...

This population imo usely plays solo.

The ones who do play online are all different.

Oh that map is hardly a speed map my friend. If anything it is a map that requires more strategy then most! The buffer area between you and the opponent is huge, so that any tech path is feasible! Hell you can even go for novaliths or insurgency. If anything it's the smaller maps that lock you into some strats like LRM spam or HC rush. And on these smaller maps micro really matters (contrary to the game design intentions).

And no people don't play these user created maps. You will find that the random large and huge maps are most often used. For smaller maps stuff like Razors Edge and Gateway are standards.

You said a line of planets from the star to my homeworld and the first thing that came to mind was how perfectly I could annoy my friends with that kind of map.

Astax is right, and I would bother repeating what he said so well already, it's anything but a speed map. I could spend 5 or 6 hours on a map like that easy.

... when i say speed/spam map i mean like you get like 100+ creds a sec within the first hour of the game. and it dosent mader how you go about the research. youll still be spamming something. like if you go research up to the novalith(sp?) cannon, more than likely your gonna spam it.

I would worry about things like Novaliths and Returning Armada on a map like this, but also with 15 Terran planets, assuming they have the standard Terran militias of 1-3 Kodiaks and a bunch of supporting ships, that also even give Advent a good chance.

Advent's greatest assets are it's Capital abilities and fleet synergy, which on small maps it often doesn't get the chance to explore much with LRMs spamming your low level Capitals to death and your Disciples being meat for half the things on the field. If you have a few level 6's in a good mixed fleet by the time you actually meet an enemy even if they have a larger fleet you can stand a fighting chance.

I wouldn't say that kind of map is devoid of strategy, just a different kind of strategy, and arguably more strategy than most maps, since it's tactics in small maps that generally win the day and not much variation in overall strategy (Tradeports and LRMs).

It sounds interesting, although the Superweapons could probably be a big pain.

I have to agree with the others here. With that limited of a way in and way out, Superweapons are going to rule this map. The string of planets leading to the sun are going to get fortified to death. I'd even try to talk one player into taking those planets to turtle up and research the relevant tech advances. I'm not sure what would be the best race. Maybe Advent so you can Reverie certain ships and fragment any fleet that tries to rush past your turtle? Vasari for their antimatter recharge and nano-weapon interference?

Regardless, his sole job is to slap up anything that will delay a massive fleet from zipping past the front lines for your juicy, superweapon-laden rear planets. Hangers, turrets sitting by the phase jump to your rear, and lots of phase jump inhibitors are his priorities. With 700-800% delays on his phase jumps, you can wait until his last ship is destroyed, jump after him, and keep harrying his rear. Carriers will let the turtle player conserve his strength, focus-firing down flak frigates and capital ships and running away if his ships are in danger.

Any TEC person out there should be researching Novalith Cannons as fast as they possibly can. Enough Kostura cannons and Vasari can start multi-shotting important systems out of the picture. When four of those things smack somebody's production world with a full fleet sitting there, Kostura cannons start getting noticed. RA can help your turtle hold the line. Deliverance Engines aren't going to be as useful since your enemies are going to have lots of friendly culture in the area.

Enough superweapons in your rear areas combined with a strong enough delaying procedure will let you get off a (relatively speaking) quick superweapon rush, start blasting well-developed planets off the map, and leach the strength of the inevitable "OMGWTF, crush them now!" counterattack.
