I downloaded a map and tried unzipping it into the Galaxy folder which has all the other maps in it, but it still didn't come up on any of the lists in the game.

Make sure you also change the map type to 'custom' when you go to start the game.

maps made in galaxy forge show up in the normal map sizes (small, med, large, ect). So if you made a 4 man map (or downloaded one) it will show up in the med map selection. The custom map selection is for maps made using the in game map maker (which really doesn't work well). It would be nice to have the game transfer maps made using galaxy forge (like starcraft and the C&C sires dose when you join a game thats custom made). It would be nice to see that in some update later on because that would encourage map making using the program. Right now its hard to find other ppl with the same map that you downloaded.

I downloaded two maps and put the .galaxy files in C:\Program Files\Stardock Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Galaxy, but they still don't show up anywhere on any of my map lists in the game (small, medium, large, ore custom).

That likely means the maps are pre-1.03. Open them up in Notepad and change versionNumber from 0 to 1. 1.03 changed slightly how map files were read, everything made afterwards with the updated Galaxy Forge will work fine, but everything before needs that one manual change to show up in game. ;)

for custom maps you downloaded, save them here:

Vista: C:\Users\YOUR NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sinsofasolarempire\

Xp: C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sinsofasolarempire\

That's where the mods, replays, saved games, and custom maps are, and should be.

Galaxy Forge made maps need to be in the game's install folder, not the user folder :P But that is true for mods/replays/saves/screenshots ;)

Nyka put it in galaxy map where you installed the game [not my documents]
and open the maps with notepad or something else and change version 0 to 1 that worked for me and the maps just showed up between the existing maps
good luck
