Two versions of 1.04?

Hey, I was trying to play with my brother today, and the game did not work--he got an error message saying the game data was different.  I had updated using Stardock Central, and he had updated using the Sins website.  Is the version being distributed through SDCentral different from the website version?  After I updated using the website version, he was able to connect.

Yes, it seems so and I already addressed this here twice since the SC-version gave me troubles I had to re-update with the website-version.

I'm having the same exact problem with 1.04. My brother just bought a digital copy of the game and updated it through stardock central. My copy was already up to date through stardock central, and both appear to have the exact same version... 1.04.022.

So what exactly do we have to do? Could it be because he has Windows XP and I have Vista? I don't know what you mean by the "website-version". Thanks!

it appears as though the 1.03 patch has been re-pushed through SDC with a modified version number, there are no changes from 1.03 to 1.04 SDC, the real patch is on the sins web site. Somebodys gonna come in to work on monday and go "whoops".

Both the SDC update and the standalone one via the Sins website are fine, and the same, regardless of the fact that the version numbers are slightly different. The Impulse update is the one that sometimes gives trouble (and it was pulled quite a while ago).

no, I had to download it from the site, the SDC update did nothing at all. What you're saying is the "official" story but unless they've fixed the SDC one already, then all it does is check against file versions you already have, and not download a thing, since all your files match, unless your running a patch prior to 1.03.

Perhaps. My story is a bit odd, because I downloaded from Impulse first. Even though it appeared fine (I played a game online fine), because Stardock said it could be bad, I downloaded the standalone patch and installed it. Then I ran the Stardock Central one (which may in fact have done nothing).

The best bet is definitely to run the standalone patch.

Yeah. SDC probably just checks file creation date tag against the ones it has for updating, since your tags would have been newer, it would have done a grand total of nothing, the same thing it did for anyone running 1.03. I'm assuming everyones having the problem with SDC, and they might not be. I have however heard some grumbling on IRC about it as well, so I'm guessing its just a problem with the SDC version. Of course I could be completely wrong about WHY its doing it, but it seems to be the most logical conclusion for the behavior I saw.

I will say that it seemed like the SDC patch did nothing for me. But of course I did do the standalone patch first, so it didn't really have anything to do. About the only thing it probably did was change the value in hkey_local_machine\software\stardock\drengin.net\sins\version from 1.04 to 1.04.022.

I can concur this one. I patched 1.04 through SD and my friends from the website patch. I hosted a game and everybody was getting "different version" error when trying to join.

I then downloaded the patch from website, patched the game and after that there was no problems.

edit:

Ok checked this through SD and Sins is reported now as version 1.04 and tries to update it to 1.04.22. I think Iam gonna pass since last time the SD version gave us headache.

Aye, I also have confirmation of this through zzzguy. The SDC version is messed up, checking changes that were supposed to have been made, the SDC version doesn't have them(defense vessels still cost 3 supply, aren't affected by weapon techs, etc). The web site download is the only real patch.

I ran into this problem this past weekend trying to get a game going with some friends. One thing that we found for those who purchased via SDC, doing an uninstall and reinstall of the game *does* get you the latest version. So that's an option, albeit a time consuming option.

You can simply download the standalone one and install it, and it will overwrite any problems. No need to reinstall.

The Impulse patch is back online as of a few days ago, which I just updated to late last night. We'll see later today or tomorrow if that screwed anything up. :)

hmmm, so it stands that whatever is doing the file checking actually has the 1.04 patch files then, but the dates and/or version numbers that they are checking against are the only thing thats incorrect.

Could someone from stardock look into this please? This could be causing a lot of headaches for people that don't use these forums that aren't posting here :/
