Laggy Game with a high end computer

I get like 8-10 FPS when i play the game on a 50 or so planat map and its unbearable but yet this is one the games that I can enjoy playing on free time over years, like still do with Gal Civ2.

Basically its a very high end computer, 8800GTX, QX6700 Extreme Quad Core processor... 4 gigs of 4-4-4-12 timed Ram among other stuff.  I figured its something with one of my settings or something.  Vista updated to SP1....there is no overheating or throttling on any of my components.

I dont know I just have terrible performance on this game even with everything on low.

I have dual monitors but the game is played NOT in windowed mode on just one.  really I cant even think of anything else that would have an impact though feel free to contribute whatevers.  I just want to get this game playable

Graphics won't matter in games like that (I'm assuming you're playing a large map with 6 or 7 AI players). I'm playing the same size game on my 2.0 GHz athlon with a weaker graphics card and I get the same thing. I'm pretty sure it is a CPU limitation, it is a lot of information to calculate but I don't know if it is a design issue or a clock speed issue. The game can't take advantage of more than one core so a quad itself isn't helping you any.

Does it lag right from the start? And how many AI players in the game? I'll fire one up tonight and see what happens, although I just played a 5 star map with 3 AI opponents and around 40 to 50 planets and had no issues. (XP SP2, E6750, 8800 GT, 2 GB RAM at 4-5-4-11. Both CPU and RAM are overclocked).

yeah me too, there are many posts currently floating around regarding performance issues. Still waiting to here on the matter.

here is my thread and another I have been following,

what KP said. our best guess so far is that its AoE calculations for Advent abilities thar are the main problem, ie Malice, Guardians, Subjagtors. these problems happen even when zoomed out/graphics at low, so we think its the calculations rather then the graphics. an official post on the matter would be nice.

I dont have a single issue playung huge map 100+ planets.. the largest map i can find basically, in windowed mode on 1280*1024

I am running:
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs)
Memory: OCZ DDR2-1150 2x1024MB FlexXLC Edition Dual Channel Kit
Hard Drive: 2 x 320Gb Samsung SpinPoint T166 HD321KJ 7200 16mb Cache SATA II
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX
Monitor: SyncMaster 206BW,SyncMaster Magic CX206BW(Digital)
Sound Card: Creative 7.1 X-FI ExtremeGamer Fatal1ty
Speakers/Headphones: Creative Inspire T7900 Amplified 7.1 Speaker System
Keyboard: G15 Gaming Keyboard
Mouse: MX610 Wireless Laser Left Handed Mouse
Mouse Surface: Flexiglow Mousmat
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254)

Everything on high, now the one thing you havnt mentioned is.. how does your pc perform with other games?
Also download 3dmark06 from http://www.futuremark.com/?hash=376345 and run that.
I get about 14k points, you should get the same if not more.

Also you said you got 4gig ram, i assume you are using 64bit Vista? if not that may be the issue.
32bit can only really see upto 3.6gb of memory, this includes video memory (768 on GTX) and addresses for all your hardware.
This will prevent your ram running in double data rate (Slot 1&3 or 2&4) effectivly with will decrease performance.
I have been told that Vista SP1 shows all 4gig of ram?? but 32bit systems cannot USE that much memory.

This is a stretch, but this game doesn't take advantage of multiple cores. Might your processor be a bottleneck on a large map like that?

Just a suggestion. I am limited to the size of map I can play because my C2D can't quite keep up.

I can play smooth as silk... until stacking Advent Guardians fire up their shields, then it's ouch.

This is not true. I have 4GB of RAM in 32-bit XP on a trio boot (XP-32, Vista-32, Vista-64). It is true that 32-bit OS will only show you between 3 and 3.75GB but the system uses all of it. It does NOT decrease performance.

check either Microsoft's own KB, or any tech forum (including the one I run at diy-street.com/forum). You'll see this is folly. (the performance decrease)

The game tends to do exactly what the original poster and others claim for my rig in any of the 3 OS's. Seems like the game does bottleneck the cpu, especially in multiplayer when it is calculating not only all of my own moves + AI moves, but the other players as well, and then trying to synch the info back to all of us. This is one of the pitfalls of P2P networking.

Core2 E6600
4GB DDR2-800
8800GTS 320MB
4x80GB SATA II Hitachi RAID-0
all watercooled, all optimized, blah blah blah. No problems with other games (other than Crysis).

Game is still playable but we tend to stick with maps that have less than 50 planets as about 1 hour into the game, the stuttering gets pretty bad for everyone. When one of the players is playing on a rig that has only 1GB of RAM, the stuttering gets started even faster.

Hopefully an expansion or such will rectify the problem by allowing true multicore support (or whatever the problem might be if it isn't a cpu bottleneck)

The Adama Repack Multiplayer mod includes Balknight's Graphics mod v1.2. It actually tones down the effect of guardian shields so that the game does not lag in the least when they are activated.

Here's a link to Adama Repack, or if you're interested, Balknight's standalone is always towards the top of the modded forum threads.

Might help with the problem, helped when i was using a slower computer.

Then again might be drivers or 1 of 100 other things.
