What do YOU name your Capital ships?

Just please don't say fluffy.

I'm just interested in what you guys name your capital ships. I figured it would be a fun thread!

I usually play TEC and name my first few ships very methodically.

1st cap: Kol Battleship
Name: TDN Bahamut
Why?: Because Bahamut is a friggin' mythological serpent-dragon in all of the Final Fantasy games and plus, it sounds like an awesome name. I just got in the habit. Plus he was a beast mid-game (lvl 7-8).

2nd cap: Kol Battleship
Name: TDN Tiamat
Why?: Well, Tiamat was never as strong as Bahamut and usually isn't by the time he rolls out.

3rd cap: Marza Dreadnought
Name: TDN Yiazmat
Why?: Well, I gotta keep with the final-fantasy dragon-related names! Yiazmat was the insanely high HP boss from FFXII for any of you who don't know. And he took way too long to kill. 1.2 million health, methinks? Plus he sounds like he likes to raze planets.

I really run out of names at this point but usually like to keep it mythology related (ie Cerberus, Diablos, Titan, etc). And I don't have a system for the other two races.

Please, someone else tell me names to help me assure myself that I'm not the only dork out there.

I think i stopped trying to name my ships in my 1st or 2nd game. I wanted multiword names ala WH40k. So when that didn't work i lost interest.

I get the Atlantia and the Galactica and the Pegasus.

You get the Valkarie and the Pacifica and any of the others that got blown up that arent my normals...

I name all of my planets and my ships after my wife, her best friends, and anything else she likes at the time. That way, she seems to recognize that I remember who she is, and then I get more time to play computer games.

I guess if you're single, you can name things after mythology and TV shows, but those days are long gone for me.

I'll tend to name my ships following along a theme.

Actors:
TDN Tom Hanks
Brad Pitt
Edward Norton

etc...

or sometimes bathroom items

ToiletPaper
Plunger
Tilefloor

Of course the range is huge. Car companies, domain names, you name it.

.... I hope someone smiles when they see it =).

I'm greek so mostly pre-christian greek female names like artemis, athena, demeter, electra, europa, hera, kallisto, nemesis, nike, olympias, pandora, themis, thetis, etc.

at first i named mine after Matrix theme
with exeption of Neo no such ship in my fleet :D

then i tried ancient gods pharaohs , kings and so on.... but got bored
so now i simply use cap. ship names from Freelancer...if i name my ships
what i don't like is fact that after naming it i don't want to lose it and if i do game seems kinda...well just not the way it was
in 90% of my games i refrain from naming my ships

If I have the time and inclination, I try to name my stuff after ships from Ian M. Banks 'Culture' novels. Sadly, most of those names are a lot longer than are allowed. Which is a pity, because just some of the names from "Excession" are awesome, let alone the other books:

Fate Amenable To Change
Furious Purpose
Serious Callers Only
Shoot Them Later
Sober Counsel
Appeal to Reason
Anticipation Of A New Lover's Arrival, The

Is that last one not the greatest name for a ship ever?

With the planet or capital ship selected, click the orange-ish arrow at the top of the portrait window. You can only have about 12 or 13 characters though. Unless there's a mod I'm not aware of that changes this.

Ditto, at least if I'm playing Advent. Gutted about the tiny name length though. No "What Are The Civilian Applications" for me :(

It'd be nice if (a) name length was increased and (b) you could create a name file which would automatically be used for your own ships / planets.

If I name them (this is reasonably rare!!!) I use modified anime or video game names (the theme may change game-to-game). It never changes mid-battle, though. My favorites are Legend of Zelda and Dot Hack, but Naruto names are easiest to make unrecognizable. Or I string together random syllables. My new 96 or so planet, 7-star map has entirely my creations for names, so the will to take the time to rename the ships/planets has worn off a little...

i allways call my vasari colonizer capitol ship "fat bertha"
I don't bother renaming them most times, but if there's a key high-level one that survives, I might call it "Colony1" or "Carrier3" or something like that. The key is to immediately recognize it when its name shows up in a pop-up. I'll name my first few planets and key checkpoints similarly - "Homeworld", "Asteroid 1", "Chokepoint2" - that sort of thing.

if I play advent I use Baldr for my first Radiance (because of the devastating light that shines from it :P)
and for the rest I use other Norse mythological names

and when I play Vasari, I disguise profanity in ways that sound like a foreign language (like Alakon (i'm french canadian, so in english it's "like a dumbass" or something like that) and whatever else I think about at the time

and when I play TEC, I use Russian names because they seemed inclined for it to begin with (Marza, Sova and Dunov sound a bit russian to me heh)

I give my capital ships recognisable "theme" names that instantly tell me what kind of ship an announcement is talking about, and which one. (fixed order of usage)

Colony ships:
Exonadence (advent only)
Dominance (non-advent only)
Conquest
Victory

Battleships:
Sabre
Blade
Dagger
Axe
Lance
Sword
etc.

Carriers: (they get the best names, they're the ones I like most)
Black Wings
Azraels Tear
Sword of Kain
Eye of Shiva

Siege ships:
Devastation
Desolation
Destruction
etc.

Anything else:
I don't use em.

I do feel the pain of the character limit though. (I want my "Balance of Judgement carrier dammit!)

I name my capital ships after the rabbits is Watership down.

Fiver
Bigwig
Hazel
Blackavar
Woundwort
Black Rabbit

Zmog we need a Watership Down TC. Rabbits instead of starships and warrens instead of planets. Pirates are humans.

My Flag ship is a Kol Class and I always name it Tiger Claw b/c I loved the movie and this game has similar traits. I hope there will be a Wing Commander mod!
As TEC I tend to do city names, (Lexington, London, Luxembourg etc) or Wing Commander names (often the same as city names with the addition of the Tiger's Claw and a few mythos based names).

When I play as the Advent I usually use the 7 Sins plus some virtues (Charity)

For the Vassari I havn't really built a system of names yet (and since I usually play as them that shows how often I name ships).

Nothing fancy for me...

1. <('.')>
2. (>'.')>
3. <('.'<)
4. ^('.')^
6. (Q'.')--Q
7. d-(^.^)-b
8. q-('.')-p

They also double as planet designations. ;p
