A little game of name-that-book, anyone?

Just for some fun, can anyone guess what books these
characters and places are referenced from?

Barzula, Mot, Raspu, Rox and Qeteb
Rakoth Maugrim
Melanchthon
Severian
Karellen
Yagharek
Mothkin
Eatbugs (The best cat name in recorded history)
the On/Off Star
the World's Largest Carousel in the House on the Rock
Duke the Werewolf and Earl the Vampire
the Pelbar, Sentani and Shumai tribes
Reid Malenfant
Marid Audran
Valley Forge and Rodger Young
Agon, Eena, and Ka
the space habitat Goddard

Sadly, that's about all I can think of at the moment...
So, good luck and feel free to post up a list in reply.

I recognize a number of these, but can't dredge up where they're from. I know I can use Google to cheat it, but I'll play fair:

Rakoth Maugrim: Fionavar Tapestry (Guy Gavriel Kay)
Severian: Book of the New Sun (Gene Wolfe)
Pelbar etc.: The Pelbar Cycle? (Paul O. Willaims)
Marid Audran: When Gravity Fails? (Effinger?)
Valley Forge and Rodger Young: Starship Troopers (Heinlein)
space habitat Goddard: One of the Culture novels by Iain M. Banks? Or is it a Ben Bova creation?

That's all I can recall.

Anyone remember Teela Brown? How about Linden Avery?

The habitat Goddard I was referring to was in both Saturn and Titan by Ben Bova... haven't read any Banks yet, but I definitely want to.

Banks is awesome. I highly recommend him.

Just thought of a few more:

Cirocco Jones
Aiken Drum
Signy Mallory
Ana Ismehanan-min

I'll throw in a pair from my desk.

1. The INSS Lenin
2. The Federation of the Polities

Never heard of any of these! Dang. I am out of the loop.

Well the worlds largest carousel in the house on the rock is in the wonderful novel American Gods by Neil Gaiman.

And I'll throw in some more names from one of my favourite SF series:
Clavain and Triumvir Volyova

1) Ah, good one. From The Mote in God's Eye (or one of that series) by Niven and Pournelle.

2) You got me there, although I feel I should know it.

Theleif: I know where that's from, although I've not read the series yet. So I'll leave it for someone else.

Okay, another one: Robinette Broadhead.

ringworld (larry niven)

What about Shylock? Harry Seldon?
Shylock I don't recall (unless you're talking Shakespeare's A Merchant of Venice), but Seldon's from the Foundation series.

*edit* Wait, was that the Mule's name (Shylock)?

No, it was Merchant of Venice. "If you wrong us, shall we not revenge?"

The Mule's name? I don't recall. How about Gaia? That could be considered his name ;)

Ah, the Foundation trilogy. That's another other favourite SF series.

Here's an easy one:

Duncan Idaho

And a trickier one:

Duncan's way too easy, Dune. All of 'em. At least all Frank's of 'em.
I think I'll love this thread, let's give it a go...
Hmm...
Ignace Karkasy
David Bowman

Reid Malenfant: Stephen Baxter's Space/time series. I personally hated those books :P

Hmm. How about:
Gurgeh (should be easy for some of you :P )

There's a lot of references of which I haven't the foggiest on... I'm going to have to do a lot more reading, he he.

1. Ristin

2. Jake Featherton

3. Montauge

4. Winston Smith

5. Atvar

anyone know where these characters appeared?
Winston's from 1984 and Atvar is from Worldwar. I haven't a clue on the others...

How about:
1. Olhado
2. Bean
3. Wang-mu

Linden Avery reminds me of The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever by Stephen R. Donaldson. I think she was a character in the latter books of the series.

Ristin is also from Turtledove's World War series i believe.

Sadly, these are the only ones I recognize at a glance from a series by Sara Douglass. I believe that the first book in the saga was called "The Wayfarer Redemption" but these guys did not appear until later in the series, like book 4 or so.

My turn to add to the fun. How about:

Dorrin, Creslin, Ryba, and Jeslek
