Moons

This is a request for moons/a moon in the grav well of uncommon planets. These could be upgraded to be powerfull defense mechanisms at huge cost. I'm thinking that a stronghold planet(one with a moon) could be of immense tactical importance. The downsides could be that it is targetable though planitary bombardment weapons, including novalith, and that it could orbit the planet(meaning it could be avoided though timing would be a big part). This is just a request and responses welcome.

Cheers Nivad

you are not alone. Check threads like "What we want in the expansion pack."

Just for fun though lets think of all the cool stuff moons could do!

- Extra Credit income or see option 3
- act like a free PJI due to added gravity? Mebbe? (ok, it makes no sense, but it still would be cool)
- Be seperately colonizeable?
- be the only platform for superweapons? That would make border planets with moons very key points to control, and keep from superweapon spam
- Terraforming for added awesomeness?
- added tech/log slots to a given planet?
- increase chance of an artifact being found on the planet?
- space pony nature reserve?
- be an uber resource asteroid? (like 1.2 crystal/metal per second but with a more expensive and longer constructing extractor)
- Increase culture! (idk why...)

and lastly,

- be key drop off points for smugglers trying to make their living on the border worlds, keeping away from Alliance patrols and reavers alike. Which reminds me, the vasari menace is reavers. I know.

Orbiting could be bad, though, unless you want big areas of your gravity well to have unbuildable areas so moons won't crash into structures or ships in combat to get mashed. Even if the moon were at or beyond the edge of the gravity well, I'm sure players would be less than thrilled if they had to manage their arrival times and locations to avoid getting creamed.

I guess I still don't see why this sort of thing has to happen in the form of an orbiting 'moon'. Wouldn't it be easier to simply make a planet type that has more than the usual amount of tactical slots and make this sort of firebase require that many slots?

Didn't I hear somewhere that some kind of defensive battle-station is already planned for a future patch/expansion? I'll have to look that up.

I don't think it was ever said that stations are "planned", but there was a mention of a possibility :P

As for moons, they've been suggested since beta. Still, for realism's sake, the game does have them. The Earth's moon is pretty unique as far as moons go, and most are just pieces of rock trapped in a planet's gravity. Take a look at Jupiter, with its 60+ 'moons', most of which are just chunks of rock. In that sense, these are already in-game. Most grav wells have rocks if you zoom in close enough, and the resource asteroids are essentially moons as well.

It's not quite the common idea of a moon you can interact with, but nonetheless :P

That's actually pretty genius idea. Make moons a neutral facility. That way they're invincible. But, you have them use a negative number of logistics and tactical slots. The negative number should lower the number of slots you are using up, and, in effect, increase your maximum capacity. You can't build anything without having the planet around to get constructor units, so no problem there.
