Why playing online sucks

Well, let's be frank about online.

Here's the problem.

Games are to long: Well... This isn't a problem but the games general design and the way it's played out. But because games last so long, like 3-6 hours i find, i myself seem to have to leave... or someone else does. Which completely destroys the fun!!

Crashing: Wow... if i crash because of mini dump one more time especially when i'm about to win i'm going to cry.
Crashing is a huge problem, especially when games are hours long sometimes! God thats annoying.

Pirates: Ya pirates are SOOO annoying, most host leave them on and no one ever seems to complain but me. I hate it, you always lose like a teamate or one player right off the bat. Because he's forced to build a army instead of producing his economy and gaining planets, So as soon as he kills them pirates he then has to prepare to fend off another!!! yay!

No fighting: I've been in games where there's been no fighting because the people get to the point where there planets are so re-inforced and protected that they easily can win when defending, but if they attack they lose and vice versa. This creates a standoff of nothing happening which turns the TEC and Advent in using those dam cannons which you cant get to because of the reasons above.

Allie sucking/Leaving: Ever get in a game and your ally sucks so much he leaves or gets killed in 5 minutes. Well thats never the dam case. He always sucks and dies about a hour in, you then realise "Holy crap i just wasted a hour of my life and now im boned!".

Capital Ship dying: Ever get in a game where your buddy or the ennemie sends their capital ship in and it dies right away and they leave, hell ya. Then guess what, they leave..... always!

Stats mean nothing: Stats are stupid, they aren't but they are. I have about 15 ames played and all loses because my freaken ally leaves or i have to go take a huge dump or some crap and i'm forced to leave. Anyways i've had the problem of thinking i'm paired with some brilliant guy who's got 54 wins and 10 loses. I've now come to notice stats mean nothing and chances are he got those wins for being the person who didnt have to take a huge dump or leave during the game. Hell it's true i'm sure most victories are won by people leaving.

Anyways you guys are free to talk about how you feel about online and stuff.
I feel that SOASE is a totally different game online and not in the good way. Sorry i don't have a 3-6 hours to sit around to play one game. By one game i mean one freaken round type of deal, Feels like such a non-accomplishment when you lose or have to leave, kinda like... dam 3 hours doing that and i got nothing done.

SO.. yeah.. there are alot of newbies.

On newbies leave when htey lose theri cap.

Caps suck, you're fine without them, they're just wasting 50 fleet cap usually past the first 20 minutes of the game.

And 3-6 hours long? I haven't played a game that takes more than 2 hours in over 100 games(this is including 5v5's)

And no fighting? Stop being wussies. This is why your gams take to long, you're not aggressive enough.

IMO online sucks because its all about spam. Whoever spams LRMs faster and gets HCs faster wins. Sure there is strategy involved, but almost all games come down to LRM-HC spam, and who does it faster. Comebacks are pretty rare, since fleet cap screws you whether you have ships or not, and cap ships suck. Actually, anything not directly helping your LRM/HC is pretty much a detriment.

Compared to games with Micro like COH, where 1 squad can beat 2 because of superior tactics/micro, this game feels more like C&C with planets.

IMO they need to improve culture a ton, and give reasons to use other ships. Make them more multi purpose, and less specialty, or make ALL ships specialist, so LRMs are only effective against caps/HC, and HC are only good against lights. This way mixed fleets would be needed, rather then beaten by numbers... Especially since mixed fleets cost more research. A lot of other tweaks could also turn this game into something really groundbreaking, rather then a weak RTS and a weak 4x combined.

I really aint looking forward to this patch I read and I read on this forum and I feel like its leading to fast as hell games, no time to build, timers so your forced to build in pure C&C rush style with 1 or 2 combos or fail, everyone playing on small maps for insta wins and insta gratification as opposed to enjoying the game. (Use the multiplayer save feature, if the guys you are with let you down , dont play with them again and get some folks that are more reliable.

If someone is doing sims in space and turtling attack them. Game should speed up. Also I may still be a newbie but RUSH a fleet the quickest before people get of the ground and start cordinating attacks with yourself and an equally skilled team mate and the other team is going to have to be reactive as hell. (I have been in the position of being reactive instead of proactive thats because I didnt move fast enough\was not aggressive enough, didnt do optimum build order). Also in regards to turtling , if they are doing that chances are you should be able to snap up extra resources then have the finances to turn the 1 or 2 roids they have into a complete warzone, killing trade ships the lot. within 30 mins they are going to have to think about taking back some roids or they will get flattened

I hear ya but theres always been an element of spamming of units in any RTS I know to some degree. I imagine thats why they made sins play at a more sensible pace, time becomes a factor in strategy, like they say strategy on an epic scale, maybe its just me but I dont class rushes and speed restrictions epic in the least , that is limiting the scope of the game in a big way and all because many lack patiance.

sd please sort edit so people can update posts but honestly while I hear peoples frustration but I am a newbie and havent DCed or even went afk in a game yet, games thus far have lasted 3.5 hours max sometimes alot less than that. (So its not all newbies to blame, in fact to me it stands to reason more intermediate or even veterans will do it, come to think of it Im sure I saw a clan match where when the team realised defeat they all DCed, obviously so they didnt get the defeat)

People need to be realistic , who crys about a loss more a casual player who is only in it for enjoyment or a clan player who is really dam (maybe overly)serious about winning, stands to reason those would be the ones most likely to care about a silly loss on their score sheet. Sorry its just being new I dont like being branded a DCer, I respect a person when I lose to them. (As long as they aint shoutin abuse or such heck I learn from it)

Very true. I became so frustrated with the other players on the last online strategy game that I quit. Even now, I'm a little cautious before playing online (still haven't played this one online yet). Out of curiosity, why don't more people realize that these games are meant for fun?

well, you hit most of the reasons I don't play it online atm.

I know you can't fix idiot players but you can shorten the length of a game by making a mod (dev one hopefully) that would make everything either build/move/attack faster and have faster income - or - reduce the costs of everything (but still raise the stat integers). Most waiting is based on resource accumulation, which is fixed by faster gains or lower costs. Rarely do I flake out long enough to let a small enough fortune to amass, that is before I have 10 or so habitable planets.

You can save the multiplayer games. Also if the games take too long in days, remember this is a complicated 4x game. Also try making the Map size smaller... it helps.

This is with any game in particular. At least the support and patches are relatively fast compared to games that are Triple AAA titles.

You can Turn them off in single player or Multiplayer

That is a bad player, not the game.

For judgeing if a player is new it is useful, which helps multiplayer matches even the teams.

So we are arguing semantics here? It all depends on your perspective I like 4x games I dont like RTS click fest 5 min wander games and thanks to what boils down to silly semantics lets just say sins is a hybrid. Its a good game but people are crying because it takes an investment of serious time and strategy per game and are determined to ruin it rather than move on. I can sympathise with some of the people having certain problems but this whole semantics crap is just stupid, you would have to be pretty silly to not have some idea what you were going to be playing before purchase, I had never played a game like sins but from the footage I watched I could tell what it was going to be like and come to think of it if we are going from the sublime to the ridiculous with semantics then sins does say its a hybrid, it has MP pause features like a 4x. Also the notion that the games for people who suck at RTS once again it depends on how you look at it, maybe its for people who dont like the same old crappy formulae thrust on them since 20BC (Exaggeration obviously)

Sorry but I thought this was for serious feedback not for the trivial and to insult people like myself that think RTS games in the main are flawed, I could resort to insulting many in most other game genres but thats just immature 13 year old kid material.

If were going to be insulting I could easily make the assumption many are moaning because they have too short attention spans and lack the cordination to get a group to play a large game in multiple sittings. Just to say its clear on the box its a hybrid so supposing the game only has 1 remote element of 4x the company still has every right to mention that because they also CLEARLY say its a hybrid, for all you people that are so wise in strats and myself a mere mortal its funny I was aware what I was getting having never played? Do more research before buying next time. Look I have not researched before buying and suffered for it but I learned from it so the 4x argument is really splitting hairs and pointless.

Have a problem with the game mechanics say, that has a point and can be up for getting fixed but degrading into the trvial is one way to get the thread ignored.

Just dont appreciate huge generalisations about whole communities and because they dont like something efefctivly saying its because I am superior to them, what cack. This thread has now gone from constructive towards spliting hairs and mud slinging at the sin players hence I will not be contributing anymore on this thread. I am happy to participate as long as its solid reasoning not just bickering and insulting players skill level, everyone here paid and has as much right to enjoy the game as the next person and I enjoy it.

I don't understand why people are complaining about the (potential) lengths of some of the games. I mean, can you imagine how long it would take to play Civilization or Alpha Centauri in online multiplayer? Imagine waiting for everyone to take their turn. It could easily take 60 hours! With Sins you get to make most of the same strategic decisions you would make in a 4x strategy game but with far less micromanagement while also being able to play it online. (Come on...does anyone really enjoy picking out which squares of land should harvest the metal and which should harvest the food, etc.? Does anyone really enjoy moving their settlers and having them make roads and mag tubes across the land?)

Most of the games that I've played take less than 2 hours to resolve. I think it's a great game for online multiplayer (minus the technical issues).

i think multi would be much better if there were not mini-dumps. as is, u can't know if someone is a dropper cause they just randomly dropped due to a mini-dump. i get mini-dumps sometimes, prob 1 in 10 games (usually the second i'm obviously winning

if mini-dumps we not a prob, people could just not play with people who are known droppers.

also, saving the game is not a viable option for random player multi games IMHO. even in games where the host adverts that if the game drops we will restart etc, they never restart that i have seen from the saved game. more less how will you figure out if someone dropped cause they had to quit or cause of minidump without stopping the game and everyone going back out to the lobby.

saving the game and restarting it with random players just never happens from what i have seen.

And thats the reason why ppl always leave when i join any game in C&C3 lol!
I guess my 5 wins 40 losses doesnt impress much

The fun thing is that those 5 wins were all in 6-8 player FFA games, im not a crappy player, the reason i got 40 losses is because of idiot allies that refuse to lend any sort of assistance in any way at all.. With 3 players attacking me everytime i play a teamgame, and my allies happily picking flowers, its no wonder my stats suck.

So yeah, stats are pointless.

Surrender , quit , surrender or quit?

Thats not the issue.

THe biggest issue I have is that noobs leave the moment things go sour , and mess things up for their Allies who desperately wanted this noob to atleast takeaway the attention of one enemy , so they still have a chance against the other enemies.

And the annoying thing is that its a catch 22 situation.

If the noob "quits" which means hes a pussy , then atleast the AI takes over and its probably better then him and I would rather a noob ally quit , so that the AI can do a better job dealing with the enemy.

If the noob "surrenders" ,well kudos to taking a stat loss , but now his 5-6 planets on full income are completely useless and inert , and the enemy can just laugh , kill any remaining ships , and just casually take over his planets without resistance , thus making a 4v4 into a very fast 4v3

I actually get the feeling that noobs think surrendering is compensation enough for leaving early. ITS NOT.

It would be Lol if it weren't so sad. You're saying that the online aspect of the game sucks when you haven't even played it yet (!?!) The online multiplayer aspects of the game aren't perfect but lots of people love it and play it online.

What would help is having an ability to set speed of the game, and having it completely free, up to players. I also think it is wayy too slow, but, all the rest is auther's fault. I mean what king of reason is that- my ally leaves? Is strdok suppose to put stamp on every guy who leaves?
