another noob question

I'm playing my first game.  I'm using the first scenario where the two empires are next to each other.  This scenario does not allow me to have any capital ships.

I've beaten the Advent back so that they only have their home planet.  However, they have a huge fleet with a Halcyon C and Rapture BC.  Since I can't build capital ships of my own, what are my options?  I'm currently just playing a cat-and-mouse game with them.  I can't take them out in their home system, but I can't get them to engage me where I'm safe.

They did manage to mangle my homeworld while I was taking their last colony.  I'm now trying to rebuild, so my resources are limited.

Do I need to just build as many Kodiak HCs as I can?  Research until I can build that big cannon?

Any help would be appreciated.

If they're holed on one remaining planet and you control everything else, then yeah. Two Novalith cannon shots will win you the game. Otherwise, what's 'in' their huge fleet? Just make a pile of the appropriate counter, go in, and mop up.

Or, failing that, a pile of Kodiaks will most likely do the trick.

I'm not sure what the appropriate counter for each ship is. Is that posted somewhere?

Well, what are you up against? Someone here could easily tell you, I'm sure.

And there is a list of armor, weapon types, and such floating around but I'm not sure where to find it.

What scenario would not allow you to have capital ships?

ARe you sure u didn't just not learn about fleet logistics?

Um, guys, I'm guessing he's playing the very first 10-planet single-player map on the list. I don't think a Novalith is the answer.

jayswimmer, the answer you seek is likely on the third research tab called "logistics". You need 1 trained capital crew, 50 unused supply, and a capital ship factory (which is a planetary logistics structure) to build your FIRST capital ship. You can see the number of capital ship crews and free logistics slot as the two numbers just to the left of money in the screen header - research on the third tab (logistics) increases these numbers.

Your second and following capital ships costs a capital ship crew, 50 free supply, 3000 money, 400 metal, and 300 crystal to build. The first one costs zero resources once you have the factory.

Suggestion: restart the game. Build a capital ship construction facility immediately, and then build a capital ship. Watch the numbers at the top of the screen as you do this.

If you want to finish your current game, you will likely have to increase your own logistics slots at one of your planets before you can construct a capital ship factory. They're slow, so make it a planet that's close to the bad guys to save time.

He might be going for the 'win without using capitals' achievement, I forgot what it was called.

Don't think so. It's his first game according to the OP.

Jayswimmer, if you receive an answer that works for you, please have the courtesy to let us know?

Thanks,
