Destroying/Scuttling Lab Structures (Noobish)

Once you have researched all the technology you want from a given tree is there any reason not to scuttle the associated labs?  I tried this as Vasari.  I reseached my way up to RA, then scuttled 3 Imperial Labs, so I could replace them with Trade Ports.  Even though I only had 5 Imperial Labs left, RA continued to work just fine.

As far as I know, there's no drawback to that plan, except the inability to conduct further deep tree research.

I tried this as TEC when I rushed to get Heavy Cruisers, I then scuttled one of my military research labs (I didn’t know what would happen so I only scuttled one), and found that I couldn’t build any more Heavy Cruisers, could you build any more gates for returning armada, or did it just continue to give you ships?

RA continues to give you ships, you just can't build more gates.

It's great if you're holed up and you have no room to expand. Just replace civs with miltary and start getting a bunch of subverters.

I just tried this and it works just as JinxOfSin says. Returning Armada works fine on the gates I had but once I scuttled down to 4 labs I could no longer build any new gates.

Generally speaking, abilities and passive bonuses are not cancelled when you lose the required number of labs. The only things that's affected is researched ship hulls, researched building types, and the ability to build *and* fire superweapons. It has been confirmed that you aren't able to fire an already built superweapon unless you have all 8 labs.
