Help with Logistical limits

Just got the game and have some trouble getting started. To unlock the Ship Cruisers, I need 5 weapons labs. All I've been able to build is 4. I've used the grant additonal slots buttons and they are now greyed out. How do I get the ablility to build the 5th lab? And the first planet I found needs artic research - Can't do the research because I'm out of slots. What am I missing?

Maybe someone will correct me here if Im wrong but with your current situation you need to try and take another planet and build actual civic research stations in those slots (not military). I think if its TEC you want to leave slots initially for a couple of civic research at least and 1 or 2 militarys, that is if you start again

I kinda did the opposite of you last game, built all civic research stations, didnt leave enough for military research stations and got owned but anyway in your case you need to remember about civic research stations as opposed to just military, both are useful.

That artic or volcanic research is vital dependant on the map you are on and they require a certain amount of civics, See civilian section in the research window. Send your scouts out and if the closest planet is volcanic then research volcanic first else research the others dependant on what planets are close to you to be captured.

Just thinking to salvage your current game , if you have maxed logistics and they are full of military and need research on artic then maybe you can demolish 1 logistics structure or whatever it takes to get the artic research or whatever then get a massive fleet and by that time artic will be researched, take another planet and fill fully upgraded logistics with military if you want

This is why Im trying to master huge maps, I want to get high military research like yourself but civics are needed to get a good ecco. so I figure get long range jumping then get to a star and get far away planets, get them defended and max out research

Yeah, you're basically outta luck here until you expand. You need to find/take another planet you can currently colonize, or if you can't find any reasonable targets and the only ones around are ice or volcanic planets, you'll need to scrap two of your other logistical structures to build two civ labs and research the appropriate tech.
