"Nerfing" means a strong capability or exploit has been made harmless. I.e., turned into a Nerf ball.

"nurfing"?

haha, you must talk to too many 12 year olds, tbh that's not exclusive to sins. Id say there's not so much sland but acronyms; LRM RA HC etc.

"Nerfing" is a pretty common term in videogames really. Otherwise there isn't much slang, but a lot of acronyms.

nerfing started in the MMO Star wars galaxies.

A nerf is a kind of grassland animal thats pretty useless and docile and used for food in star wars, so when the devs of SWG made stuff weaker the term nerfed was born.

Haha, that's absolutely hilarious.

Except it's completely wrong.

Not to burst any bubbles but we were using the word Nerf back in the beginning days of UO when they Nerfed Ebolts and such :)

I would rather say that to "Nerf" is to change something that works good and break it.

And it's been around even longer than that, though i can't remember the first time I heard it... probab on a MU* someplace. I know the earliest MMOG usage I heard was probably in Subspace way back in the dawn of massive multiplayer, but it wasn't new then, either.

All you need to know is it originates with Nerf a long time ago, and refers to something in a game(usually something considered overpowered, but not exclusively), being made less-powerful-- IE: Less dangerous, like a Nerf ball.

Nerfs do exist in Star wars, but that's not where the term originates and has nothing to do with the gaming slang.

AND NOW YOU KNOWWWWW the REST of the backstory... GOOD DAY!
