Subraces?

An idea I had for this game was having subraces, I am unsure if it is possible, you all tell me.  It was for a thing I wanted to do with the factions from a RPG called Alternity, but could have many applications.

Basically, humans have explored a part of the galaxy, and as they did, different governments/factions formed.  So, one could pick human (TEC) but then could select a "subrace" which would provide a number of other bonuses and penalties (balanced, so even).  In this way, there would not need to be tons of custom research of ships for a race, but still a player could select something more, to make it have a bit more variety. 

In a perfect world, a subrace might even open a custom research tree and / or a ship or two.  This still would mean far less work for a subrace than a real race.
More than likely, it would mean gaining some research a level earlier, balanced with some a level later, and then perhaps one more modifier above or below the normal on things.  Perhaps that way, or perhaps a
planatary bonus" somehow applied to the race?

Well I have good news and bad news.

The bad news is the way you speak of it, Subraces would require quite a bit of editing to the game itself which most modders can't do unless they're VERY skilled. I mean you're adding a number of things that require activation depending on planets, race, etc.

The good news is that this could be attempted at some level cuz it actually sounds pretty good.

Very well, another question - is there a place to add some bonuese and penalties on the player entity? Perhaps even link a planatary bonus? Or something similar . .

There could be, though I haven't messed with the files enough to discover such a thing.

You would have to create it classified as a new race (with the understanding that it is part of the overall whole, as printed in a readme file) The game will not recognize it as a sub-race, but you can still treat it as such, but the coding will be done as if it were separate...

I suppose in the next expansion pack the devs could write it in, like What EA did with C&C Generals, putting sub-factions in the expansion. Right now, I don't think the modders can truly include sub-races in, besides the way described by Helio.

Good idea, though. Do you play EVE, by any chance?

hey dragonsbane know a guy who can create "subraces" he is Shipmaster

Right now he is working on his personal mod Orgins the problem though is that it requires quite a bit of coding but if you PM him he could exsplain it a bit more indebth but basicaly you create a entirely new "species"

i know you dont want that but it is the most efective right now

But it works so far.

i honestly didn't really like the sub-factions in C&C generals i kinda find the whole subrace idea annoying. u either are a race or not a sub race would just complicate the game hugely
