Question about Construction Ships

Hello. I just bought the game last night. I was worried that it might be too complicated, but I'm gradually getting the hang of it. However, I ran into a problem. I don't know how to create new construction ships. Beyond that, I found an asteroid with some nearby resources I could extract. Its out on its own, though, not near a planet, so I can't get my construction ships over there. They don't seem to be capable of warping like the other frigates. How do I utilize the resources that are out there?

You don't build construction ships; they come with your planet. Have a look at your planetary upgrades that increase your logistics and military construction slots. They'll tell you how many extra construction ships you get. For example, upgrading your military slots from 0 to 1 gives you one extra. But they aren't hyper-capable and will never leave the grav well they're built in.

Mining asteroids in gravity wells without colonizable planets (space wrecks, gas giants, meteroid fields, etc.) are pre-built and cannot be "constructed" - you need the scout (if Vasari) or colony ship (if other race) to enter that gravity well, wait until they charge up enough antimatter, and then take over that facility by landing a crew at it.

Thanks for the quick response! So if there's no facility pre-built at the asteroid, the resources around it are pretty much useless, then?

Also, what happens if I accidentally salvaged one of my construction ships or if one of them is destroyed by the enemy? Does the planet automatically generate one to replace it?

There are asteroids and there are "asteroids"... If it's a big one in the center of the gravity well it may be colonizable. Click on it and check it's description, as long as it doesn't say dead (IIRC) it can be colonized with a colony frigate or a capital ship with colony capability like the Akkan (TEC faction).

If there are only small chunks of rock one or two may have metal or crystal on them. These can be claimed as stated above. An enemy can come in and destroy it and then reclaim it as their own... likewise if you are at war you can bring a ship in and do the same.

Colonizable Planets and Asteroids don't have "facilities" on them like resource asteroids do... the little gold or purple picture denoting metal or crystal is a handy way to know which are the resource asteroids, and being big in the middle of a grav well is a good indication of a colonizable one.

The word "Asteroid" drives me nuts because it's used for everything in Sins. I wish they'd called it "PLANETOID" for the colonizable asteroid, and ASTEROID for the mineable ones.

Here's a synopsis that might help.

COLONIZABLE PLANETS include the four types of world (terran, desert, volcanic, ice) plus COLONIZABLE ASTEROIDS. Of the last, there are two types - ASTEROIDS and DEAD ASTEROIDS. ASTEROIDS support a population with one upgrade (10 --> 20 people), and always have two or more RESOURCE ASTEROIDS in their gravity well that you can construct mines on. DEAD ASTEROIDS are also colonizable, but come with zero population and no RESOURCE ASTEROIDS. The only reason you'd colonize a DEAD ASTEROID(because it generates zero taxes and has zero logistics slots) is that you can build military structures around it like hangars, regen bays and turrets so it can be used as a chokepoint defense.

Of RESOURCE ASTEROIDS, there are two basic types - PLANETARY ASTEROIDS that only are found in all colonizable world gravity-wells except DEAD ASTEROIDS, and indestructible ASTEROID MINES that are independent and found in gravity wells that do not have colonizable bodies (like space wrecks). After you colonize the planet, you can build crystal and metal mines on the former; you use scouts (vasari) or colony ships (advent; TEC) to take over the latter so their production gets added to your queue.

Construction ships are autogenerated every so often. If one gets destroyed, another will eventually magically appear as long as you own the planet.

As long as the expansion packs don't include a new race known as the "hemorrhoids", an even less sentient race forced to leave their volcanic homeworld after deadly meteor storms turned their atmosphere into a noxious, odor filled cloud... Although defending against them would be fairly inexpensive... Preparation H is far cheaper than guns or ships. Now we just have to figure out how to launch enough of it out the port hatch to be effective...
