Help with modding .entity files please

I'm starting out modding and I can't figure out what to open up the entity files. I have tried notepad and wordpad but neither seem to open them right.

any help would be great

The ones in the game are in a non-editable binary format so they load faster. Grab the modding package off the downloads page, which includes the plain text versions and a tool to convert them to and from binary.

Forge Tools, just under Particle Forge in the downloads tab.
