Couple questions from a noob

So i heard there was a way to check how many refineries you could build before they would stop increasing the extraction rate.  Where is this?

Also, about how large should my force be or at what stage in the game should i be building my second cap?

I don't know about the first one as I've never actually used them before, but building a second cap (for me online anyways) almost never happens unless my first is destroyed. As part of my starting strat, I actually scuttle the cap factory for a quick boost of credits and crystal, two things I need for my assailants.

Generally, I'd rather have 8 ships that do 15 dmg per second than one ship that does 60 dmg per second. Warfare upgrades also scale way better with more smaller ships.

when you move your cursor over an extractor, you see 0/3 or 1/3. I do not know what text is next of it, but 1/3 means that that extracctor can 'handle' 2 more 'refinerie-ships'. sorry for my bad english  ;p 

and that second capital ship....well, I agree with paulta :p better 8 ships with 15 dmg per second than one ship that does 60 dmg per second. but when you have about 30 ships or something, I think its time for another capitalship. (they are so great  :CONGRAT:)

I tend to disagree, I find that multiple cap ships can kick butt later in the game if you can afford to have them. However, I usually play solo and you HAVE to use a different strategy if your playing online. When online its prob better to go with alot of smaller ships rather than a few big ones. The beauty of this game is that there isnt any formula though, just a bunch of choices. :)

Caps come in useful for doing something specific such as the Marza bombardment, or for the fact they can pound a planet without having krosov (or equivilent) reserched/built.
But in an early battle, I would rather spend my 3000,400,250 on some LRMs and hoshikos plus a garda or two if there are fighters to deal with... Later on if I had spare resouces then I would look to get one, but only if I also had the resouces to train it up to lvl 3 or 4
