My concerns with modding....

Hello,

Ive been making mods for my self but I never really decided to put one up on the site. Reasons why are to be explained...

Ive havent visited the Sins forums in about a month but before I left it seemed that any new mod was shot down by the already existing big deal modder's. Most of them complained and trolled there posts by saying "Oh why dont you try doing something different then that." or " We have enough enhancment mod's already. Why dont you create some new model's or something."

I cant understand why every mod project has to be a big deal. I come from playing Warcraft 3 and there were tons of custume map's.

Will we ever see a bigger variety of mods on these forums or will it be the same 5 or so mods running the show. The community needs to start encourging people to make more mod's instead of putting them away.

That's just my 2 cent's.

Than you,

Matt

The seven deadly sins mod is getting insane.........i think star wars and star trek ruin it personelly. I'd just look weird as hell.

The difference between this and Warcraft III is that the community here is say, a 50th of the size, and every little personalised mod that only 10 people will play splinters the community further.

Additionally I'm not going to point out the innate differences between a Map and a Mod.

Because a TC is a big deal.

Look at how many IP mods there are right now. I will bet you 1000 internets that no more than one or two of them are going to end up being released. And if they do, more than likely they're going to be exactly the same as Sins gameplay with new names and mediocre models.

The truth of the matter is seeing "HEY GUYS WHAT ABOUT A *insert extreme-niche IP here* MOD" is getting tiresome, and even the major IP mods are likely not going to succeed. I have hopes for the SW mod and ST mod (as Evilejedi and Major Stress are well-experienced in this regard), but do I think the "90 pages of niche story discussion that won't matter when someone sits down and looks at what gameplay changes are possible" Halo mod or some of the other smaller projects are going to get off the ground? Those with talent need to stick together and get stuff done, and those with simple ideas need to be told that there are thousands of franchises out there. The community needs to figure out whether they want a bunch of dead mods or a few ones that proceed to release.

If people want to create their own mods, I have no problem with them announcing whatever they want..but if they want to recruit they need to do so considerately. If you have an "idea" for a mod and have no talent, don't bother.

My first priority was to make new models, because it lends itself perfectly for such a thing... ...but I can't convert files with the SINS converters, all they do is open a screen for a split second and then close... ...and all MESH converters on the net don't put them into any recognizable format...

Do'h!!!

Personally, I'm all in favor of a little competition. The only way the modding community is going to get better as a whole is for up-and-coming mods to challenge the status quo. What will happen is either the old will be replaced with the new, or the old will be forced to adapt to the ideas exemplified by the new mod.

Of course, as it's been mentioned, you have to be able to personally add value to a mod to really be of any use to the modding community. I'm sorry to say it, but -everyone-'s got ideas. Programming talent and artistic ability, however, are rare commodities. I would recommend anyone that's got an idea to start doing some research into the modding tutorials in this forum and try to implement their idea themselves.

Full disclosure: I'm creating my own mod that I hope may be able to be that new mod that displaces the old mods. :D

Id like to thank you all for your input on this. I for one dont thing it requires much talent to mess with the Reference file's. Model's probably a little bit more but it's mostly about gathering the money to pay for 3d-studio max or what have you.

Ive been working on a mod for awhile and who know's... I might put it up on anouther account to see how thing's work. Just a little test.

Once again thank you,
Matt
