Stardock still updates Galactic Civilizations -- 2 years later ...
That is quite misleading--you no longer update the Galactic Civilizations you released 2 years ago, you update the 2nd expansion pack that you released a month ago.
I haven't played Galactic Civilizations 2, but from what I've read the statistics seem to be:Galactic Civilizations 2: Dread Lords
Game Release Date (USA): February 21, 2006
Latest Patch Release (1.4x): October 26, 2006Galactic Civilizations 2: Dark Avatar
Game Release Date: February 8, 2007
Latest Patch Release (1.8d): November 7, 2007Galactic Civilizations 2: Twilight of the Arnor
Game Release Date: April 30, 2008
of Patch Release (1.95): June 17, 2008
Given those statistics, you seem to generally update a game up to 9 months after it is released. Afterwards, you either release a new expansion pack or you move on to something else. Nothing wrong with that--it's an understandable business model, but please don't pretend that you're still supporting a game you made 2 years ago.
Stardock still updates Galactic Civilizations -- 2 years later and those updates were always only "exclusively" available through Stardock Central (the predecessor to Impulse).
Also misleading. You released patches non-exclusively all the way up to 1.4x. The gaming sites gamezone.com and filefront.com both have all of the patches up to 1.4x available for download.
This is important to note, because in both scenarios (GalCiv and SoaSe), you initially release stand-alone patches, only to subsequently leash all of your new customers to Stardock Central/Impulse. While that is a cunning marketing maneuver, as I mentioned before customer "lock-in" schemes often destroy the incentive to improve product quality. Any sane customer would find that unacceptable.
As before, I'd like to conclude that Stardock/Ironclad/you shouldn't use customer "lock-in" schemes (in this case, Impulse-exclusive "deals") to guarantee a profit--instead, you should let the merit of your work bring you success. It certainly worked this February, and I have ever reason to believe that your good work will continue to pay well.GalCiv Patches on GamezoneGalCiv Patches on FileFront
