Activating a mod

I've been trying repeatedly to get these things to work and the following is a small collection of what I have tried...

Well after repeated attepts to make it work it still doesn't...  The mods show up in the mod menu and "load" but they don't make it into the game.  One of the mods I've tried is called "Miranda_Starship_Mod" and has two folders inside of it.  I guess I must ask, "How does the computer load a mod?"

Another is called RealCombatMod and does not have any folders in it, just data, which I am assuming is from Game Info, but I'm not entirely sure...

The problem here is that the computer knows there is a file there and "loads" it but that file does not show up in the game... Please tell me what is wrong.

As far as I know it should go SoaSE/Mods/Mod name/gameinfo, particle, or other folders, depending on the mod.
I've not tried either of those mods you mentioned.

Hmmm, well I was just wondering if to make a mod work you needed to not have folders within it or not...

That particular Miranda one is just a model--you'd need to mod it into the game yourself to see it, it does not include the needed entity files and such to do that directly.

As noted in the Real Combat Mod's readme, it is not made for use with the mods folder, but for direct replacement of the base files in the game's GameInfo folder (always back up first).
