Here's real information about the Space Ponies thing:
It's a joke. You get that achievement after exploring planets, but it doesn't give you anything. It's a joke/easter egg left over from some beta or something. It's nothing. It's bullshit. Period. It's not cool, there's no secret, it's not even cute anymore, people should grow up.
Just get it and don't worry about it, you're now 2% closer to 100% of achievements.

It's also a clan: http://www.thespaceponies.com/

its an old beta joke

Haha, such negativity. But I guess its understandable, its a zero effort 'make work' bonus.

A word of advice devs, if you're going to put a joke bonus in the game make it in the fashion of the cow level in Diablo or the cake in Portal. There has to be a reward, whether that be a *funny* joke or a reward, make it worth discovering.

I remember the ponies.... :NOTSURE:

The greatest creatures to roam the forums and the game.
Sadly all of them, or at least nearly all of them, have died long ago...

On the post "Cheats" theres a trick to get the acievement without trying to get it.

I recomend just playing the game. Forget about finding them, and they will turn up. Or go on a map with hundreds of planets and explore every one

I got it on my first game only five planets in. ;)

Uh.... I just got it and I have no idea how. I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING! I had just started. I had one ship colonizing a planet that had no enemies around it, and sent a level 1 Marza Dreadnaught (fresh from the factory) to destroy the only two ships around a neutral planet away from the one I was colonizing. I destroyed the first, and then I got the award. I have no idea what I did. I never even explored a planet.

That's just it. The bonus randomly appears as far as I know.

AFAIK, space ponies were those people who most relentlessly beta tested the original Soase.

I thought it involved exploring a planet, or some secret thing I have to do. But, judging by my experience and others, it's really random.

You found the ponies,,,good luck finding the pink ones.

It is discovered by exploring a planet, it's just a really low chance (higher on pirate bases).

I didn't explore a planet, though. At the time I didn't own any planets other than my home world, which starts by default with 100% exploration.
