Uh.... I just got it and I have no idea how. I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING! I had just started. I had one ship colonizing a planet that had no enemies around it, and sent a level 1 Marza Dreadnaught (fresh from the factory) to destroy the only two ships around a neutral planet away from the one I was colonizing. I destroyed the first, and then I got the award. I have no idea what I did. I never even explored a planet.
That's just it. The bonus randomly appears as far as I know.
ive played a fair few games (probably close to 70 now, in entrenchment and vanilla) and still havent found them ='(
AFAIK, space ponies were those people who most relentlessly beta tested the original Soase.

I thought it involved exploring a planet, or some secret thing I have to do. But, judging by my experience and others, it's really random.

It is discovered by exploring a planet, it's just a really low chance (higher on pirate bases).
I didn't explore a planet, though. At the time I didn't own any planets other than my home world, which starts by default with 100% exploration.
