Can you explore a star? Once you reach a star can you occupy it or what can you do once you are at the orbit?

See the map descriptions. Not all maps consist of multiple star systems. Most are just a single star system.

If you dont get the tech you will be stuck in your starting star system. so if its a single match save your cash, basically.
