Fighters V Bombers

What do you think is the perfect ratio of fighters to bombers and why?

I personaly like a ratio of 1 to 1 so that my fleet can attack and defend with equal force.

I use 1:1 erring on the side of fighters.
Fighters are faster and effective against bombers, while bombers deal heavy damage.
Plus I modded up the number of squads in my version. :D

I look to see what ships make up the enemies fleet and adjust accordingly. That is the whole point of strikecraft, you can adjust to fight different fleet compositions.

Depends. ;)
I prefer fighters more, because they're more usefull: they kill bombers and ships with light armor significantly faster than bombers can kill other ships.

That's exactly what I did in my recent SP 1.05 game. In my defensive hangars I used to equaly mix fighters and bombers, and it worked quite well for killing those ships AIs sent to scout. But when they came with 20-30 carriers, I just didn't have enough fighters to parry their bombers _and_ siege fregates, and also not enough bombers to harm other ships. Their fighters removed my bombers in the first minute, and my fighters in next 3, and their bombers and ships destroyed my orbitals in next 5. Even the usuall 4 repair bays and constant rebuilding didn't help much. I had to return my main fleet that was attacking their planets.

So I changed my hangars to have only fighters, and my planets under siege lasted _significantly_ longer - usually so long I could destroy a good number of AI's planets before I had to turn back to defend the planet under siege.

Hmm.. I created a similair post (same name) asking which is better. The real answer is that it depends on the situation. The ratio is gonna vary with game play. The best answer is that early in the game fighters are better then bombers because of the fact that you will typically encounter scouts, frigates, and LRF's. As the game progresses to the later stages it gets a bit crazy. Some say a 2:1 Fighter/bomber ratio is best while others say just the oppisite. Personally I only use fighters for fleet to fleet combat. The reason is that an overwhelming number of fighters will stop enemy bombers from harming your cap ships while enemy fighters will also be dealt with as well. Furthermore once the enemy bombers are eliminated your fighters can do a great job of shredding enemy support ships, in particular LRF's. If you micromanage your fleet, and I mean micro down to the fighter/bomber squads then maybe all fighters is a bad idea for fleet to fleet comb. But for lazy people all fighters is o.k. Now if your clearing planets I usually shift the ratio in favor of bombers. Say in a squad of ten i'll use 8 bomber squads and 2 fighter squads. True fighters are versatile but bombers make mopping up enemy installations much faster. If your using the SoSG mod that's another ball game. For the most part fighters will carry you along but in the end it depends on the situaion! Ahh... it's like squezing blood from a rock>>good luck!

I like putting only fighters too in the Hangars and I don't change this ratio over time ... they even attack with impunity on capital ships :)
jokes aside, they indeed maintain great defensive position as they kill the incoming fighters then they auto focus on frigates

Depends on which faction if using advent and vasari ill use pure bombers if its TEC ill use 1:1 bomber and fighter

for multi-player, build fighters almost outright, because the only thing anyone builds in multi-player is long rang frigs. have a few bombers with caps in case you run into another cap tho.

in that particular situation fighters are the only SC you should build, they eat siege frigates and enemy fighters pretty fast, since AI brought 30 carriers you dont need bombers to destroy any heavy targets, so Fighter was the way to go (IN THAT PARTICULAR SITUATION OFCOURSE) if he attacked with 30 Heavy Cruisers instead of 30 carriers then you shouldnt build a single fighter

Seems to me like bombers are more for added firepower; destroying other ships.

While fighters are more more defense... destroying other strike craft, siege frigates and carriers (I think).

We're not mixing a drink here, we're playing a strategy game. In strategy games, you typically employ a little adaptability and adjust as necessary, coupled with proper scouting.
