Stuff you guys take for granted...?

Hi, as a total newbie reading your forums there seems to be stuff you all talk about as if EVERYBODY knows it like for example...

"I always do the crystal thing at the start of a match..."

What crystal thing!? Having read around a bit and have worked out that this refers to buying 200crystal and upgradeing civ infrastructure - yes?

I'm sure you have all discussed this at length (& someone has crunched the numbers n proved the return is worth the investment) & I know that by playing the game I will work out this kinda stuff eventually, but is there anyone/any threads that would give me a really simple guide to this crazy game :)

I'm not after build orders or anything like that, just a list of simple tips, info that you guys take for granted - think about it you might suprise yourselves...

Thanks

these are just a few things i neglected when i started and really improved my game once i understood.

first thing that came to mind was scouts. it's really important to know what's going on so you can counter effectively and strike in weak spots, so always make sure you've got a few of them around.

other things would be:

making sure you planets aren't costing you (hovering over credits counter shows production at all palnets, red is bad) by upgrading civ structures.

getting colony ships to dead astroids/gas planets so you can grab the resources there before other people, IIRC only other colony ships can remove these (unlike resouces at planets). not only does this increase you income but also gives you a "listening post".

planetary defense is important but you don't need to go over board, it far more important to keep forging ahead (i.e. putting resources in to the fleet) than to lose impetus fortify what you have. you can always bring your fleet(s) back if you need to defend, so enough defense to keep the enemy busy til you get there is all that's needed.

that's all for now. hope that's what your after. if you are interested in build orders look for huntingx (SP) posts

One big tip.

Dont colonise a planet unless you see 150 metal or more in your account.

Aint that the truth?

Only colonize if you have enough to upgrade a planet's civ infra two times. Then you won't lose money for that planet.

before the game even starts, during the pregame lag, I buy 100 crs, sell 100 metal, upgrade civ infra, build a cap factory with one builder, set the other builder to the crystal extractor, and cue the other two metal extractors, and build 2 scouts. In virtually 5 seconds I've effectively spent all of my starting game income. I find that this sets me up for exploration, gets my cap ship out as soon as possible for expansion, and helps set up my economy with the extractors and the planet upgrade.

i do something very similar although i usually dont sell any metal (probably should considering how much i do it later). upgrading civ infra is very good to do in expected long games but in short 1v1's or if you're expecing quick rushes i prefer to put it into other things as it takes something like 20-25 minutes for you to have made back your resources that you invested into it.

i also salvage my cap ship factory after i have built my first cap (usually the mothership as advent). i'm not going to be getting another cap for a while and having a few more resources and an extra logistical slot on my home planet can be really useful.
