Beta is great - one small issue

Beta plays great and looks great. I'm running an overclocked quad processor at 3.6ghz, 8 gigs of RAM and using two 8800gtx's in SLI, on large battles (haven't had a huge battle) yet the FPS seems to drop to something less then fluid movement like 12-15 fps, approx 5 capital ships and 20 frigates and a few fighters on screen. I have everything maxed out.

Are there advent Guardians involved with their shield bubbles?

No it was a TEC on TEC battle

SLI drivers, I believe, continue to be problematic. Turning off SLI may actually improve your frame rates.

I had a battle of about 100 ships earlier, TEC VS Advent + Advent (w/o Guardians, i think) and didn't notice any slowdowns. I observed the battle from a Kols POV. Playing 1280x1027, all maxed, Specs: 2.6 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2 GB DDR2 800 RAM, GF 9600GT (512MB), running 32b Vista Ultimate.

BTW, thats a real monster rig you have there :SURPRISED:!

I have a similar configuration - dual core 2.5ghz with 2x8800 gtx's. When I first played the game, it actually hung after playing for about 30 minutes. I thought it'd re-sync, but suddenly my monitor went blank. Keyboard unresponsive - a good old fashioned hangup.

I installed the latest video drivers and so far I haven't had any problems after 1.5 hours of gameplay. I'm running SLI in AFR1, btw.

i often had problems with overclocking in some games. after i heavy overclocked a cpu the game runs very slowly. Without overclocking it just runs faster.. in this situaion i would turn of the overclocking for a test.

Sorry for off topic.

Is it possible to replace the shield bubble fx?

Firstly,it slow down the whole game. Then, the fx makes the on going battle very hard to see, especially a few of these ships involved.

I would prefer to have a new fx for the shield ability that is easier to see and doesnt slow down the game.

I used to have this problem too. Although the driver fix seems to indicate that it was a software issue, I'll say this if the problem persists after the update: it could be heat issues. I found that the cards were getting pretty hot, so I invested in a 160 CFM fan to blow on them. Granted, now my case sounds like a baby jet engine, and maybe I didn't need THAT powerful of a fan, but I have never ever had a hangup like what you described again. For any game.

Get HWmonitor if that does happen to watch the temperature of your cards. If they get in the 80's, you might want to check to make sure you have good case ventilation. By that, I mean some great airflow coming in from the bottom of the case in front, with equally good air blowing out the back, plus a casefan mounted next to the side of your SLI setup blowing towards the cards.

If you have done this and heat still remains a problem, or you simply want to try to solve a potential GFX heat problem without having to shell out $ for fans, try this software to tweak the fanspeed of your cards:

This guide will tell you how to do exactly that, step-by-step:

---- back on track ----

I have a similar setup to the OP's: 3.6 overclocked e8800 dual-core, 2 gigs of ram, and twin 8800 GTX OC's in SLI with two 10,000 RPM Raptors in a RAID-0. I used to have some occasional issues with guardians and their shield bubble, but after the beta-patch, those lag spikes entirely disappeared.

Hope this helps.

Edit: I'm using 175.16 forceware for the cards.

the only problem i have seen is that the pirate cash menu does not change to reflect the highest enemy to bid on. i.e. when your in a bidding war, starting on the person with the lowest bounty on him is not so great when you actually changed your focus to somebody with more bounty on them.

I'm having fps problems too.

My specs are:

Dual Core 3.16 ghz not overclocked
Nvidia 8800 GTS 512 meg
3 gig of DDR2 ram Corsair
22" Fullscreen monitor

In a 200 ships battle with around 5 cap ships on each side, my game started running at 9-10 fps, which was very painful to watch. I expected things to go smoothly, as I can run Company of Heroes with the highest settings without a problem.

PLEASE NOTE THAT I'M NOT IN BETA. But still, if anyone got any advice, that'd be great. I love this game and I love epic battles, it just kinda sucks to watch them go frames by frames :S

^^^^^^^

To be honest, I never did get into a fleet battle that big pre-beta. Most of my maps were smaller or medium, though I do recall the FPS dropping even on my rig with larger battles. It mostly dropped in the 10 or below range with Guardians and their shield bubbles... that hum they do when they are activated always was an indicator for me to zoom out of the battle real damn fast :D

Try upgrading to the beta though! It seems extremely stable, and the FPS improvement is massive--not to mention, the textures look wonderful. If you don't like it, revert to the previous patch. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
