Isn't the Assailant missile upgrade useless?

Isn't the Assailant missile upgrade useless?

The first missile upgrade says it gives you a 5% chance of bypassing shields. Most ships have close to equal shields and hull. So even if you're occasionally bypassing the shields, you'll still decimate the shields long before you kill the ship. In other words, the 5% of shots that got through would have gotten through anyway, because you still had to fight through the shields. So you wouldn't kill the ship faster at all. Am I missing something?

the thing with phase missiles though is that they have a chance of exiting phase between where the shields go active and the ship itself

For capital ships, it's higher, I've just never bothered to check how much higher. I think it's 70%, but don't hold me to that.

I think you can hit shield mitigation numbers like that with Advent caps with the in culture upgrades. Ordinarily, capital ships max their mitigation in mid 60% range.

As to the OP, my experience has been that phase missiles are a powerful weapon once the upgrades are researched. They're harder to bring to bear late game because assailants are still strongly countered by heavy cruisers. Nevertheless, the upgrades are still worth getting because all Vasari strikecraft use phase missiles, as do some of their capital ships, especially the Desolator. A Desolator with phase missile upgrades, supported by some Subverters can inflict serious harm on any target fast.

Hmm, well that's good to know Annatar, thanks. Makes me want to play Vasari a hell of a lot more, that's for sure.

As for those wondering what the fluff behind shield mitigation is, it's described as analyzing what incoming weapons fire is attacking the ship and adjusting the shields to best compensate against it. Thus why mitigation starts off at a lowly 15% as you are unsure as to what is going to be trying to tear your shields down.
