Laptops and Zoom...

I purchased SoaSE pretty much when it first came out, and installed it on my desktop PC I had at the time, everything worked fine, then I installed the game on a recently purchased laptop.  I have the most current version, and for some reason, the zoom function will not work on my laptop (i.e. zooming with the fingerpad scroll).  Do I simply have to buy a USB mouse to get the zoom to work, or am I forever doomed to the zoomed-in view of planets and structures?

Use the keyboard shortcuts for zoom, v and b. Most laptops apparently have to go through an extra step to get the trackpad to register correctly, and that seems to mess with functions associated with a mouse wheel.

During my gameplay (10 hours into my first game, 5 stars), I've fould myself using my mouse wheel like crazy. It's sensitivity to zoom from/to the marker makes for an easy and smooth jump a'la Black & White from one planet to the other; the more distance, the more wheeling. I definately encourage getting a mouse over a touchpad (I'd say that for any game anyways ^^). But settle for zoom hotkeys and scroll screen if you'd rather avoid getting a mouse :) should work fine.

i've actually done this the other way round, coming from a lap to a desktop.

after 6 months worht of play, it's certainly possible to play effectively using v and b (z,x and c are also useful predefined zoom levels).

saying that when i started using the mouse it was like a whole new game, so i would recommend playing that way if you can.

thanks much, everyone.  i suppose i missed the hotkeys when i was leafing through the manual.  the 'v' and 'b' keys work perfectly, and my 5 starsystem game is suddenly much more manageable.
