Vasari strategies for long games MP?

I play online with some friends of mine and our games usually take fairly long.

My basic strategy is to spam assailants. I upgrade civilian to rank 2 or none if I don't have ice/volcanic planets close to me and keep teching missiles, sentinel, sub and later on enforcers as main units. At that point I have 2 Devastator and 1 Marauder Cap.

The thing is, if I don't beat them early - and I usually don't because they bunker up or I only get 1 killed, i'm a little fucked. By now eg a TEC opponent is getting shitloads of credits off his trade ports and starts adding heavys to his carrier spam.

Should I go defensive and also start teching civil up to trade ports / portals / DA? I would have to invest a lot into economy and still the enemies would be better off financially. How can I save an offensive early/midgame strategy in a long game? Or if i know how defensive and economic my mates play....should I play a different strat right from the beginning?

thx in advance.

DO NOT SPAM IN THIS GAME! It shows you are desperate, suck at the game, or just overall do it to show you have won a shitload of games.

I may've lost more games than I've won, but who cares, at least I kick ass in all of them! NO SPAM NEEDED, except when I do it for fun to decimate AI fleets :D

The Vasari strategy is mostly the same as Advent, except spend a little less (Less for Vasari means more later, in firepower and numbers). Even with a couple frigs and a cap, they could easily put down an average-sized TEC or even Advent fleet.

If you're playing a long game, then yes, fully tech and build up your economy.  Economic structures and technologies will pay huge dividends in the long term.  If you don't plan on fleshing out your economy, then I would recommend being extremely aggressive and taking your opponents out early; if it gets to the lategame and your opponents have a fully developed economy while you have none, then you're probably going to lose.

End of EmperorPalpatine89's quote

Building the only unit worth building until I get subs+enforcers is "sucking"? I'd call that the only good way to get an upper hand fast. Of course I could also build 2 of each kind because the models and weapons colors are so very very beautiful...sentinels and skirmishers are tanks and counter units, nothing more.

Edit: Oh yeah, forgot - they're one thing more. Expensive.

Well, there's RA....

Basicly, research returning armada and build lots and lots of phase gates and rely on the free ships they give you...

But i could never get the phase gates to serve there main purpose... so i never use it...

Phase gates are quite useful actually

Having the frigate factory on an inside planet which is not attackable so easily is preety useful. I mean, getting your frig factory destroyed just when you need it isn't too good.

Okay, econ booming and teching to RA is really free win. I didn't realize RA was THAT powerful. Won a 4 player ffa against a (nooby) tec, vasari at my skill level and hard npc even when fighting on 3 fronts.

In a game where the map is so big that you are very safe for the first 30 minutes or so, RA rushing is almost unstoppable unless you are fighting an extremely experienced player.  This is why it will be nerfed in 1.1.

For LONG MP games without the RA rush <IWIN> button, I present my 10 Simple steps to win with Vasari.

1.  Build the Space Egg and expand quickly.  In addition to becoming a late game siege weapon, the Egg is peerless for rapid expansion.

2.  Send scouts to find and take every neutral extractor possible before other players get around to them.

3.  See rule #2.  This is how you early game econ with Vasari.

4.  Spam Assailants.  YES, it IS your most effective ship early game.

5.  Scout enemies, if they are making counters to Assailants (carriers, flak, heavy cruisers) immediately tech up and start making the counter-counter.  If they AREN'T making counters and they look at all vulnerable, you should tech up your phase missiles right now and go smash them before they get a clue.  Unless of course they have tons of Illuminators

6.  Have they been taking your neutral extractors?   Those are YOUR neutrals!  Send scouts to take em back when they aren't looking.

7.  Press button marked <IWIN2> -- Get Subverters.  Subverters + Assailant missile spam = death to inexperienced players...and most experienced players too.  (NOTE, these are also nerfed post 1.05 and I haven't had much of a chance to try em out due to annoyance with the strikecraft bug.)

8.  What??  You haven't won yet?  Ok, read 9.

9.  Extreme late game, you will use your Phase Gates to rapidly reinforce on defense and project your fleet across your territory on offense.  Your Kostura cannons will herald your arrival by temporarily turning a planet's defensive structures into art deco while your fleet smashes it and your Space Egg vacuums worlds.  Yes, the Kostura cannon is useful...especially against those lousy turtles who only have 5 worlds, but all 5 are maxed on defenses.

10.  At this point, since the phase gates are in place, I still go RA.

Good to have you back Cykur.  You're one of the few people who can articulate the way to win this game with viable strategies.

I'm not back.....I couldn't sleep and decided to see what was new in the forums.  For some reason I still try to dispense advice before one of the "Mah late game Fleet consists of 16 Capitals...." people found the thread.

Maybe 1.1 will get me back to mess around a bit...otherwise I'm waiting to see what Entrenchment brings to the table.
