Is there a way, i.e. program that will allow me to play via lan w/o a "real" lan connection?
I've used hamatchi before with various programs, but i'd rather see if there is a better one or
if i could do this at all..

You know, there are legitimate uses for hamachi. Occasionally one runs into a game/router/isp combination that flat wont fucking work. I have a couple things I've managed to get working through hamachi that just wont tunnel through the Hughesnet suckfest of a control center for an ip match.
