Unable to Upgrade or Mod

I recently purchased the game, Sins of a Solar Empire, from a Wal-mart and it's worked fine on my Vista for a few days.  I recently had access to high speed internet and when I tried to update the game and clicked the "Download" button on the site I was taken to ( https://www.sinsofasolarempire.com/update ), it just told me "File not found."  I've also had a problem with using mods provided in text format to change the Game Info folder from binary files to text files for easier manipulation.  Each time I replace the old binary with text folders provided from the site, the game simply shows a black screen and won't do anything.  I have to use Task Manager to exit it even.  I believe the inability to convert to text files might be because of the lack of updates but I can't find where to actually get the updates without error messages.  Is this just an error in my computer's internet browser or is there something else I'm missing?  Thanks for your time.

Try registring the game on the link in your post and download impulse (https://www.sinsofasolarempire.com/downloads.aspx). Impulse should take care of the updating by itself.

Odd, the 1.05 standalone download seems to be working fine right now. Though as it's only 16mb, it should be doable if you only have dialup at home or something.

To the rest--modding support was added in the 1.02 update, so if you're at 1.0 most mods will probably not work, even if you place them directly over the base files.

Most mods are also updated to the latest version (1.05), and during the course of the game the file structure in some cases was changed considerably enough that the game won't know what to do with a version mismatch.

For example, from 1.0 to 1.03 (I think), the gameplay.constants file contained an entry for max fleet points, to accomodate the Vasari tech that increases the number past 2000, but that line was eventually removed. So if you're running a version that expects the line to be there and plug in a file from a newer mod, game's not going to run :P
