Halo's a pretty good place to get into singleplayer shooters, at least. I'd actually recommend TF2 as a decent place to start multiplayer-wise: heavy is a very straightforward shooter experience, and from there he can branch out.

Half-life 2 has excellent atmosphere to immerse in anyway, old farts tend to do a lot better when there's more than just blowing stuff up.  So just get him another orange box.

Sadly, PC Halo probably is a really good place to get him started though.  OMFG easy game with a decent story, weapons, and badguys.

Oh the Id front, am I the only one that enjoyed RTCW more than Doom3 and Quake4?  A truly annoying game, I got killed by those bastards with the silenced sub machine guns so many times before I got used to killing them before they shot...  For straight shooters of course, these are all perfect.

Well, not exactly a shooter per se, and certainly not FPS, but Vice City and the sequels are a lot of fun, I spent days on Sims and Roller Coaster Tycoon, but those are builders, not shooters. Civ and Empire Earth are great also, but also they are less shooters. Well.... hmmmm......

Doom is old, but lots of fun, still, and like the poster above i think i died like a million times in the hallways in Doom2.

Remember when you left your bodies behind?  Haha, mine littered the hallways and a friend said "Whats that?" And Sam said, "Oh, thats Teal, there... and there... and there..."  Haha, but still it was great fun, even if it was 3 or 4 seconds at a time, die and reload the level.
