What is a good TV series?

In the past few years I have been watching TV series via Netflix with my family.  So far we have enjoyed Babylon 5, Stargate, the remake of Dr. Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Lost.  I am looking for a not to serios sci fi or fantasy show with some humor.  Thank you for any suggestions.

oh and Dirty Jobs and the Universe but I don't watch TV anymore since I'm in college so I don't know if the Universe is still running.

I don't watch TV very much anymore. I have trouble finding goods shows that I like now a days, and I often find it difficult to remember to be around to watch them. As such, I tend to buy the shows I like on DVD. I don't have to worry about commercials, and I can watch them when I want to.

That said, there are a few shows I know of that are good that you might like.

  • NCIS: This show is like all those CSI shows where the overall objective is to solve this crime, but they often do so in a commical way, with some humour added inbetween. To give an example of the inbetween humour was "who stole Abbies's cupcake" (she did the investigation with the same intensity that you would expect of a murder investigation).
  • Full Metal Alchemist: (Japanese Animation) This show takes place in an alternate reality, in the past, with a history similiar to our own. There is plenty of humour, mystery, and some horror involved. Their leading science is not physics but rather alchemy, something performed by those with a magical ability convert matter from one form to another with a flash of energy. So long as these alchemists obey the laws of equivilant exchange, laws that are in many ways the law of conservation of matter, everything is fine. However, for 2 young boys who tried to push the limit, and bring their dead mother back to life, they nearly lost their lives in turn. Their adventure is to try find a way to restore their bodies, without losing what they have left, eachother.

If you liked Buffy, you would like Angel. If you liked LOST, you would like Fringe.
The best Sci-Fi series hands down was Firefly, they old made one season though; It's also another Joss Whedon show so it may very well be up your alley. Apart from that there was a British show called Life on Mars, it went for 2 seasons but was a very interesting mix of Sci-Fi and a Police Drama.
Heroes is also a family friendly show and is probably the best Sci-Fi show on TV if not one of the best shows in general.

Fuck. If I knew they had whole serieseses on netflic ida joined sooner.

The best marriage of Sci-Fi and humour was Firefly tbh. Other good shows are Weeds, Californication, Dexter, The Extras, The IT Crowd if youre feeling nerdish, then of course theres 24, which was quite good in its day, theyve just milked the franchise for what its worth at this stage.

Do they have anime on there? Gundam, Ghost in the Shell, Bleach, etc. - theres a wide list to cater to all tastes.

Sliders.

End of Moosetek13's quote

YES.

Although I don't remember a significant amount of humor in it, I'd still say it qualifies.

If you can find Journeyman on there, personally I thought it was absolutely excellent.  Especially the first episode.  It may be a bit too serious, though, as one or two episodes have no comedic value whatsoever.  It did however only go one season.

There's also Seven Days.

I guess I don't remember shows for their humor, though-I'm having difficult coming up with shows that meet that criteria and to be honest I'm not even positive the above ones do, but they should be close.

Try Eureka, as they try to work some humor into each episode. Season 3 will be back sometime in 2009. I have seasons 1 and 2 on DVD, and will get 3 when it is out on DVD.

I strongly second Scrubs, NCIS, and Firefly.  The latter is a particular must-see, Smashybaby, as it fits perfectly your desire for a sci-fi show with humor.  :)

Still waiting for Battlestar Galactica.

BSG remake is a serious SciFi, very worthwhile but not what you were asking for.

For humour you can't beat Red Dwarf and for something in between maybe take a look at FireFly which concluded with the film Serenity (so watch FireFly b4 Serenity).

From Best in Faux (Season 3):

Carter: Dogs exploding all over town.

Dr. Hood: Now that is a dog show I can get into!

The dogs are Biomemetic (robotic). Only 2 had problems.
