plants orbiting

Has anyone tried to to generate a star system that has the planets orbiting the star and therefor having an ever changing system; changes the jump lane distances and allegiance levels as the distance between planets changes?

Thought it would add a level of complexity that might be fun

Planets are static, they can't be made to move. Actually, I don't recall any 4X or space strategy game... or any game whatsoever which simulated a fully animated solar system. The last game I remember doing that was Elite: Frontier... though come to think of it I am not sure if even that masterpiece of realism had orbiting planets. I know it was hard enough landing on them as it was. ;)

It would be a cool option that people could turn on and off in a future expansion or update. If you got a powerful enough computer to handle it and also want crazy realism I think it would be great.

It's been brought up multiple times; but every single time it got shot down.  The ever-changing nature of the system landscape made it impracticle to implement orbiting.

If I remember correctly, O.R.B employed Orbital Movement mechanics as part of a systems' setup.

Thats the thing though, it would take a heck of a lot more computing power than what is in a typical PC to handle the movements of a solarsystem like ours, let alone a multiple solarsystems like Ancient gifts. Maybe once we start describing memory in tetrabytes it might be possible but...

I am not that sure about that. This is from the post "three expansions": Craig Fraiser posted the following: "That is a cool idea HewCP. So cool that we tried it out a loonnng time ago in the early SINS days. We used to play a board game that had revolving planets and we thought it would provide an interesting element in video game form. Unfortunately the reality was very different. The game became very disorientating - transfering the successful player's skillset from strategic decision making to visual aptitude. :) "

Technically it seems to be possible but unfortunately the playability of the game seems to have suffered, if I understood correctly...

Shattered Suns, which just came out recently has orbiting planets. I played the Beta briefly, and did not like it, and it got horrible reviews. However, I did like the idea of not only orbiting planets, but also orbiting moons.
