An Appeal for a Squad Icon or sub fleet icon///Give a shout!!!

Too make the counter system too this game work. You need it. Lf's do not chase carriers when fleeted with the main flt. Or make a way to select control groups from the main screen. Like the flt one. Maybe a little one over the lead cobalt or something. I already do this with the flt icon. It just gets alittle confusing in my empire tree with like twenty flts. I even break my heavies and support into smaller flted squads. So they won't form a heavy crusier ball thats easy for an AOE. to affect. To get the most out of certain ships such as the lf, lrm, and carrier. It is a sorly missed function. For all those who feel me give a shout!!!!

Yes! although I am thinking that just hitting tab (or clicking the fleet icon like when clicking the planet garrisoned forces bar [the little ring around the planet when zoomed out]) to switch between the different groups.  at least capitol ships, carrier cruisers, flak frigates, and general attack frigates should have their own group.  either that or put a "Create sub-fleet" button above the "Create fleet" button when a group of ships is selected that is all within the same fleet. 

The latter is preferred to automatic groupings, and the former is a good quick way to select sub groups.

and maybe having a separate row row fleet icons (like in Age of Mythology and Age of Empires III - the banners in the upper right)  and different icons per ship type.  like if the dominant ship type is seige frigates, then a seige frigate ship icon would show up.  if it were HC's, then an HC icon would show up.

Settle down there tiger, I was just shocked that he had the exact same idea I did and posted it on the same day (actually within a couple hours). I wasn't sure if he was building on it or it was just coincidence.

Actually I tried to drum up support for the idea back  in may without much luck. Just to much going on atm I guess. Crossing fingers hoping it makes it into Entrenchment or a 1.1 patch. Honestly I would settle for just making the control groups selectable like the flt icons. It would make the Control groups the Main fleet and the present flt key would be sub-flt squad icon. Its beautiful. Anyway Speak up Peeps and be heard.

I'm playing around with an idear for Armadas atm, the problem as i see it is that even selecting light frigs to chase carriers is not enough as the get out of range of support ships.

So i'd like to be able to make an armada out of several fleets, so that each fleet has a function for the armada and as a whole it is then a rounded self sufficient force.

but this is all just a workaround for the real issue, the AI is just ... dumb. it should know that easy fragging thoose 10 carriers hiding waaaay back there is a good target and send a detachment. it should know that moving lr frigs in front of 20 hv cr is a bad move,  etc etc, the need to micro is just on a stupied high lvl for a game that tries to be epic in scale. A battle in sins should never be won because a certain abillity was microed at a certain time -- that is tactic an i bought a strategy game. games should be won by making the right choicis in fleet comp an empire building not on tactical choices imo.

the battle AI should play at a lvl equal to 90-95% of the very best players. microing a battle should give a small advanatge but atm there is no way the AI will win if you are out numberd but have a better fleet comp without microing simply because it has no comcept of how to use it's abillities.

The advent holy triology using animosity-> malice -> vengence -> shield restore-> from3 diffrent capitol's should be useble by the ai when all CD's are up while a player that micro's could use it more effectivly by not having to wait for all 3 ships CD's to refresh.

But atm the noob AI just throws the ships around randomly and fires off it's abillities all around randomly ie using malice with 1!!! ship in range etc etc. the result is that on anything but small 1v1 maps ( that are over before you get to that lvl of play anyway)you just spam crap with aoe abilities as microing anything in a 200ship battle let alone 10 20ship battles is pointless.

 

somehow it's really funny though, we train crews and officers to fly muti trillion spaceships in a battle for our very survival but apperently they sux so bad that we have to make a datalink back to our capital so we can tell them what to do at all times as they apperently never passed 3'rd grade.

...As said by kruppe....The tactical choices involved in micro-managing is strategy, along with fleet comp and empire building. That is what makes the game so epic. There is a slow almost chess like strategy to it...But then there is the no hesitation quick choices u have to make in battle which is sometimes the most important part of ur strategy. Making that part easier with squad icons or something would take micro management to a whole new level. In the heat of battle desisions and ship movements must b made quckly...If i cannot quickly move the appropriate ship class to where i want it during battle with reletive ease...The balance of it all seems for naught....Not having squad icons is a setback in forming precise strategies...........And to some....If u want slow pace strategy without the pressure of making on the spot choices....Go fly a kite or buy a chess board or something.

I agree, squard icons is a must, my other point is that the AI shoud be better at taiking advandtage of synergies and abillities.

the advent mothership using malice on 1 target is a prime exampel.

 

as i said i want player interaction to give a 5-10% boost, atm that is not really the case but more like 50%+ meaning that in a 3+ front situation you will loose as you canot concentrate on any 1 battle, im not saying blabla QQ i cant win 3v1 the point is with the amount of microing doing a 10player 25 stars becomes kinda impossible and you have to go back to lolmap's with 1 star and 80 planets so there are 2-3 choke points at the time as that is pretty much the limit for keeping a decent uptime for abillities on manual

let's say to identical fleets enter battle

there are 5 different outcomes

X destroys Y

X defeats Y but suffers catastofic looses and must resive reimforments to continue attacking

Draw

Y defeats X but suffers catastofic looses and must resive reimforments to continue attacking

Y destroys X

Atm the fllet that is microed will utterly destry the 1 that is not, I'd like the AI buffed to a lvl when it only looses marginally
