Title says it all. A friend and I have bought the game to play each other and Ironclad is junk and doesnt work half the time we try to log on to play. Is there any other way for us to connect to each other through the internet and play?

You can try an IP to IP connection to your friend. Click on Multiplayer and click a desired map and then click create game. Your friend is going to need your IP address and Port number. There is a website to tell you your IP for you and its below. You can use just about any port, like Supreme Commander, by default, uses port 1957 when i connect to a friend using an IP to IP connection.

I think you should give ICO another chance, this is really the first hours-long problem that I've seen since I started playing it online back in April.
We've been playing via the multiplayer. One person has to host and share his ip with rest. Then enter and volia. Game time. 
Same here you should give ICO another chance because it is very good high quality, almost always running server. This is the first time in a long while thats its has been down due to technical difficulties
You could also establish a VPN and just play it as a LAN game.
There are a lot of opinions about ICO, but one FACT is that I have more trouble with ICO then I do with any other online game service. Maybe I'm the only one that's having these problems, but that dosn't change that fact that I am having these problems.
