Mine Spam = BAD
I've just heard a lot of ppl talk about how they hate the mines for all of the races and thought hey ill make a thread where they can say whatever they want about mines so here you are.

The mines need an effective counter than can come along and clean them up.....
otherwise...

Scouts are a great counter ![]()
mine spam = bad. pls fix. the end.
You mean scout spam? I'd like a dedicated minesweeper - maybe give scouts an autocast ability that clears mines? Having to manuever a scout a bit at a time to clear a field is micro heavy and annoying.
Also, if possible, please fix my ships autotargetting. Going after things on the far side of a minefield while there are legit targets on the near side is annoying. I spent time building that fleet and I expect it to survive.
Scouts can only see some of the mines, and they can be killed, then you can't see them and they kill all your ships. I laugh, because I love putting a ring of mines right where you enter the gravity well, so when you jump to my planet...
BOOM!!! your poor fleet never stood a chance.
Craig, once they're fixed they might be, but as-is, the short range and 'flicker' nature of the de-cloaking makes them just about useless.
Is it just me, or has anyone found that after having a certain amount of mines, they stop exploding? I got the minelaying ship (Vasari) and it has basically filled a gravity well just chasing enemy ships around, but just recently in my game, an enemy cap ship went straight through the minefield and nothing happened. I tried to manually detonate them but it said "can't target phased out targets", but the cap ship wasn't phased out. Anyone else get this?
yeah thats true if u invest in about ohh 300 scouts the real problem is not the counter but the amount of mines that can be deployed in a grav well its not even funny
You and me have a HUGE divegence of oppinion on that one.
I have to agree with everyone here...I tried using scouts and scouts assisted by other ships. Unless I'm doing something horribly wrong, scouts do not seem to be much of a counter at all.
To make matters worse, it is very very hard to steer ships through minefields. I have never really had much of a problem with the big rounded paths ships take through things, but with every system chock full of enemy mines, it is horrible trying to move your ships around without them going wide and catching a mine. The amount of micro needed is crazy.
if there were a cap to them, yes perhaps.
please take a look at this savegame.
i'm about to jump to a wormhole where the AI has placed no less than 2500 mines.
my fleet (including 6x level 5+ capital ships) will get vaporizes within 20 seconds.
sometimes this also gives me a minidump after a few secs because my 3.6 GHz E8400 can't handle it ![]()
I played this game for many more hours now and pretty much every enemy world or chokepoint looks like this.
it takes an insane amount of navigators and micro-manage-clicking hundreds of mines to get through this.
and the only way to do this without losing too many ships is a fleet of carriers/transporters on the edge of the gravity well.
eventually I cleared an asteroid "mine"-field with about 500 mines on it using 40 vasari transporters and a couple of scouts.
it only took me about 15 minutes micromanaging this when the AI dropped in and deployed another 800 mines in 5 minutes just by flying by (he didn't even attack).
please - maximum mine cap 100 per gravity well and increase build-time a lot! ![]()
otherwise it's currently unplayable in end-game ![]()
Yeah - clear this!
PS in case your woundering there is 780

Yeah, you put a Vasari mine layer at the sun and you can coat the whole sun with mines in no time. Mines are OP.
I just ran that save, My computer took it quite fine but bloody hell there were more like 10,000 mines, it looked like that pictur up above but 2-3 times as worse.
What i think is that scouts are used to detect them maybe you need only five to see a whel, then the scout gives targets for all of the other ships to destroy them but not to drive through, that will be the least micro-managing and most effective without being spammish
I have had a bit more time to play around...the Advent and TEC mines seem balanced enough, since they have a cap to them. The vasari mines are totally imbalanced....you just can't clean em up as fast as they get placed...and they are limitless. And you tend to have "accidents" with the ships you try to use to clean em up. Don't get me wrong, I usually play Vasari, but this is just crazy...
Hehe. We'll likely look at an auto ability or something to reduce the micro. Don't worry about this one, its been well noted ![]()
Cool.
Let us still mine the piss out of sectors though please... !
