Ironclad made everything using Softimage XSI, and the company offers a free XSI ModTool perfect for modeling for mods and such. It's not as robust on features as the full version you have to pay a pretty penny for, but it should do just fine for mods. Check it out here: http://www.softimage.com/products/modtool/

That's what I use and most people I know of.

Are you doing some modding? Or just playing around?

Gonna play around possibly making ship moddels for use by anyone.

Doesn't relate but I love Pro-Engineer 3.0. It's a CAD program.  I don't mod though.  I also have Maya but that's not as good, even though it's used in the game industry.

I use Wings3D ( http://www.wings3d.com/ )... it is free, very little ( 7 mb ) and easy to use...

The light program cannot work the very high poly model... but if you don't go over the 20k triangle, no problem... some real good work can be made with it... some sample of my own work...

- a capital ship with colonize for main function ( 12000 triangle ) :

- a new missile platform ( 4000 triangle ) for the ability "missile platform"

You can use any modeling program you want to make your model, but if you want to be able to use the models in Sins they MUST be finished in XSI. In accordance with the modding documentation. Mod Tool is perfect for sins and its free.

I use 3dsmax to model, but ive been a max user for almost 10 years. I dont like the XSI UI, and i hate memorizing different hotkeys for each modeling program.

Not fully true... by example, you can use Milkshape for create the weapons point, the center point, truster, etc... and export the result to XSI file...I have use Milkshape for example because it support a lot of ( game ) format... other software are able to export to XSI format...

What you must use is the XSI to mesh convector, who from Stardock...

For modify, to my knowledge, only 3DMax have a plug-in for import .mesh file...

I've been meaning to explore the Maya possibilties for Sins mesh modding, but haven't had a lot of time to explore the pipeline. I found a .ma to .xsi converter, but I can't confirm it actually works. ;D

I'm a 5-year Maya user and the XSI interace is messing me up so far (althought I haven't put a lot of time into learning it, admittedly). If I make any breakthroughs with Maya, I'll be sure to document it; I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd prefer Maya over XSI as much as possible. ^^

XSI all the way for me. I used to use 3DSMax, had a couple of years worth of experience on it, but XSI interface enables me to practically do everything bulk with a couple of keys and a mouse, which I like.

There is another program that can import the SOAE .mesh files, 3D Object Converter 4.20 and it is only $50.

Here is the link.
