I have a similar problem at times. Press CTRL ALT DELETE, find Impulse in the list and end the process. Start it up again and wait a bit. You can see the update progress at the bottom left. When this is complete you should be good to go now. I think it gets hung up on its auto update. Make sure you don't have too many heavy programs open, and dont switch between them when its starting.
