Wiring a modem

Hey guys,

I've recently remodeled my basement and am planning creating a home theater setup complete with game consoles and a computer. There is one Verizon Fios cable outlet down there with which to hook into the tv. My question is: Can I use a splitter to split the one cable outlet into multiple ones and them connect it to a modem and then to a wired router so I can plug ethernet cables into my consoles and PC. I know what components I'd need and where to get them but the real issue is would this actually work.

I should also mention that this would be the second modem in my house.

you can use only one modem - what you need is to use a router from your modem with a switch if need be the length of the cable for the ethernet are too long and such. but 2 modems on one connection - no go!

Yep. Setting up a LAN isn't like setting up cable tv. Digital has to be replicated, not split. This is part of what a router does.

The main cable line coming into your house will be connected to your modem. The modem will be connected to a router. The router will then connect to all of your applicable components; some via direct wiring, some wirelessly. It is easier/cheaper to connect wirelessly (no cables to buy/run), but one or more components may have to be directly connected.

I would strongly suggest that you contact your local internet/cable provider, and speak to one of their tech support people. Tell them exactly what you want to do, and they should be able to walk you through the steps.

Best of luck.
