Starbase vs Strikecraft

Scenario: A few carriers sitting on the edge of the grav well, Bombers attacking Starbase that has no squadrons.

Why doesn't the Starbase fire its lasers against the Bombers? According to the damage type chart most weapons have 10% chance to hit Strikecraft (and if that's not the case it should be). Even if the chance to hit would be that low, the high damage would compensate and the Base would be able to fight off a few carriers on its own. It makes no sense a heavily armed Starbase would be a sitting duck. Either the default (non-upgrade) weapons should fire at strikecraft with low accuracy or Starbases need some dedicated Flak Guns. Of course the default weapons would prioritize targeting ships over strikecraft but the weapons on the other side of the base could still fire at strikecraft passing by.

On the same note, why don't Capital ships fire their lasers and autocannons at bombers if they have no other targets in range?

(And the hangar bay upgrades of Starbases need their cost cut in half. Or the amount of squadrons doubled, as mentioned before.)

I'm pretty sure that all ships' weapons, except flak, have a conditino "canhitstrikecraft FALSE"

this has been brought up before on several threads, and from what i gather many ppl want starbases to have some sort of defence against strike craft since at present they are completely dead if they have no squadrons buildable. its my belief that if your not going to give anti strike craft fire to bases then give them 5 or 10 free fighter squads so they arent completly useless if attacted by bombers

If you make starbases impervious to strike craft you have a indesturctable blob that can only be taken down by the structure destroying cruisers.

 

A way to apply some defense is build your TEC hanger bays closer to the strabase.  When the strikecraft return they get eaten by the defenses.  Same with the Vassari, only their starbase moves so its a little more tricky.

I just took out a starbase with 2 caps and 10 cobal light frigates. Only fighter strike craft. The things really need to be more powerful

Balancing the Hangar Bay upgrades for Starbases would go a long way to deal with Bombers. Also for Bases that are built in asteroid fields etc.

It just doesn't feel right that the lasers don't fire against swarms of enemy Bombers. Same with Caps, they just sit there and take the punishment without pulling the trigger.

Avatar the point is to not make them impervious but much harder to kill with strike and make the torpedo much more useful in its dedicated role. Even with 10 strike they are very vulnerable as most human players have more then 10 carriers in a fleet wich equals over 20 strike.

It doesn't make much sense that this giant expensive Starbase is completely defenseless against a couple of Carriers.

 

I'm also not a fan of how right now Sins balance basically amounts to "Carriers solve every problem".

No i agree tridus. My solution is maybe slow carriers down and definately stop strikecraft production when enemy ships are in the same well. Problem solved.

I had an online game where I had a fleet with 20 or more flak frigs and when the game was over and i checked the stats I had destroyed over 2900 strikecraft!

I think someone figured it out!

FYI a fully upgraded starbase is a bitch to kill with a decient sized fleet - you can do it but you WILL have heavy losses (unless you use carriers) which is the point

Now if the other fleet shows up now you're in trouble. Do you finish the base, then have the fleet finish you, engage the fleet and have the base finish you or retreat and regroup...

The starbase as it is is pretty good against a mixed fleet but the strike craft issue needs to be addressed.

I do think the starbases should have weapons capable of taking out strike craft.  If carriers need to be fixed then the range strikecraft can move from their carrier should be within a starbases upgraded attack range.   This would make reduce the carriers invulnerability and make torpedo cruisers more viable.
