Multiplayer Games:
We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

The times are:
4pm EST (9pm GMT) Saturdays & Sundays
9pm EST (2am GMT)
Saturdays & Sundays

If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Lore:
We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.

Maps:
Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Please visit our website and for more information, change logs, downloads, and to report bugs. Our website can be found here: http://distantstars.mmobase.com

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

Hey Ryat,

You should arrange some dates so we can get together and play. Perhaps on the weekend would be best. You can edit the OP and put it in there so people will know they its on.

Want to start out by saying, i love this mod. The huge battles are epic!

However, i did find somethings abit buggy/wierd.
I played a small map with an Unfair AI the other day.
Once the AI had no fleet (kinda destroyed all of it in one planet with a jump inhibitor :D ), the AI seemed to bug out...it didnt create anymore ships, instead spent all credits on bounty. I must note that i had turned off the pirates as this was my first time against an Unfair AI.

Also, whenever i would phase jump my fleet into a planet, the Vasari Subvertor(?) would glitch and show up as if it was directed to move outside the gravity well back the way i had just jumped from. Mousing over said ships came up with them "Moving to (planet i was already at)."

Im not sure if these have been discussed/brought to your attention/etc, just wanted to put in my two cents.
Like i said tho, very nice mod, the parts flying off of damaged ships is a very realistic touch. :)

appreciate the commendation, the parts flying off are from the Volumetric Explosions by Manshooter.

as for the bugs you have reported they are actually from the game itself, mod just has a tendency to emphasize the AI problem (we did what we could with the AI but that is limited at best by the devs, hopefully the Diplomacy x-pack will give us better control) and the other has been reported by some that never play the mod.

I have to second the request that someone take a look at the current download option for the full ds ent. beta 0.90 34826167.7z file. I've tried downloading multiple times on different computers, each time WinRAR reports almost 500 of the files fail to unpack correctly (starts around 97%). I'd really like to try this mod.

Thanks for the response :P
Rather does suck that the AI is so limited, its easy to read and predictable :S
About the Subvertors, i personally havent seen it happen in a game without the mod, but maybe its just a pathing problem? Would it be possible to tweek it in the mod even if it is the game itself? Im a noob when it comes to mods, just curious.

@ DRoseDARs- try using 7zip.

Sorry about the delay to responding I've been away from home for a few days now and im only just catching up on things. I've downloaded the file twice over the last two days and neither have had any corruption issues for me either when unzipping the files (Using 7z or WinRAR) or in the Complete Binary for Binary Comparison I made of the files.

There will be a new complete download soon once 0.95 is finished hopefully in the next week or two. However I must warn you that corrupt downloads/files is usually a sign of hardware problems such as a hard drive or memory (RAM) failure. I'd suggest re-downloading at a less of a peak-time (early morning, during the day, or late at night) is generally a good way to tell if theres a problem with your actual downloading capability just incase your ISP is having issues during peak-times.

liekka:
Sadly there isnt anything that we can really do to the AI however it definetely warrants us looking in to the issue to see if there are any significant changes between our version & the original/entrenchment version to see if anything we've done could be causing the error.

On the subject of Diplomacy:
Yes we know its out, yes we have already begun making Distant Stars compatible with it, however we wont be fully supporting Diplomacy until we have Entrenchment v1.0 out (currently eta'd for Mid-december (2nd to 3rd week, before christmas)). Any releases we make for diplomacy we wont be bug fixing too rapidly and certainely wont be working towards adding extra features in to them until the entrenchment release is complete.

I also would to add with the latest release, Dynamic Mod will be going thru a major overhaul

ditto on the Powerful Pirates

@all who've responded

I retried it with 7zip instead of winrar and it seems to work properly. It may be that my version of WR is older and doesn't recognize the more current 7z file type.  Ce la vie.  Thank you for your help.

ARRRRRH!

Hahahaha....You already do. You know it hard to discreetly field test new technologies with your medling pirates around. Gah, work for us not the Advent.

I prey on the Advent and Vasari as well

First off, love the mod! Just thought I'd report an issue I've been having with it lately, though. Whenever I play as Vasari my game will crash. It seems to happen when I have a lot of long-range missile frigates. I tried to isolate the cause, but couldn't. In the game, I'm the only player that crashes - my friends remain in-game without any issues at all.

will it crash when the LRMs fire, or jump out, or move or when one explodes, or just at random

End of Ryat's quote
I just recently got this incredibly awesome mod installed and I also experienced a Vasari minidump with a swarm of LRM's.  No clue what caused it, but I believe they were auto-attacking a scout craft entering a recently captured enemy capital planet.

Homemade huge "solar system" map (all the real-life planets/moons plus a bunch of anomalies, graveyards, asteroid fields, and deep space sectors).  All settings maxed.  This occurred about 45 minutes to an hour into the game.

I opened up a premade map (the balanced resources map, which btw is quite cool) and have been playing Vasari on that one without making any Assailants - single-player, so I can get away with it.  I had it running about 5 hours with a ton of pauses due to baking and cooking this morning, no minidumps.

My kid was also playing a Vasari game for about an hour on a different map and had no issues, but I don't know what ships he was using (I'll open up his save when I get back to my home PC).

Could there be a slight memory "leak" or do you think it's just coincidental bad luck?

edit - forgot to mention that my TEC games and Advent games have gone off without a hitch.

Question: The diplomacy add-on is described as 'the final micro-expansion', but I thought there were suppose to be three. Did I miss something?

The Devs have decided that the Diplomacy is going to be the last addons for Sins.

yeah, they decided to cancel the third due to both the time frame in which each micro-expansion was taking (longer than excepted) and the amount of things they want to attempt for the next thing for Sins

Funny you mention time being a factor. Sins is popular, no arguments, but few games can afford to take so much time coming out with a sequel or full scale expansion. I feel doubly so when there's no story involved to begin with. I'm actually surprised that they've managed to keep as much attention as they have thus far, but I do think it's mostly due to guys like Nacey, Mooster, Ryat, Carbon, etc... because vanilla would have already bored the heck outta me.

Guess I'm just going back to the idea that they should cut you guys a check.

End of Draakjacht's quote

in some ways we would not mind that, but then they might expect more out of us

LOL and we cant have expectations. That would ruin it all :P

More than the equivalent of a mini-expansion that incorporates 11 new planets and 66 new planetary bonuses, as well as ship graveyards, improved lighting and particle effects, improved ship explosions & damage effects, improved sounds, planetary abilities, and enhanced pirates with all of the technical support and continued balancing updates that one would expect from a well-funded publisher?

Well, they might.

Well...once we split up the income we call could afford to buy a beer and then drink it together on MSN or Skype. LOL

EDIT: POST 1600!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! \o/
