If you get these log files to us (you can just paste them in to a forum post) we can hopefully get your issues sorted.

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

My "SINS" time is usually pretty limited because my wife has taken over the computer that can run it. :annoyed:

That pretty much leaves single player, but if we can schedule a time I can make it.

Here's your schedule:

The pattern almost never changes so you can easily schedule time a month in advance.

@GrayLord: Sounds like there is a lower PC - why she dont use them?
End of IHaTeD2's quote

Right, I've tried that logic, since she only does GAIA and Facebook which arn't hardware intensive.  Her comeback is all her files and links are on the new computer.  I haven't succeeded in convincing her to simply move the files and links over. O:)

Hey guys, the  webpage that the download is hosted on is out of date, is there somewhere else I can DL this mod?

It works just fine. What version you trying to download?

I just tried every download link in the OP. All were downloading as they should. I also check the site and its up and running.

Everything works for me too...  =\  Could have maybe been a net hiccup or play with your browser settings.

GrayLord, you could always move them over yourself...  Don't know if that'll start an arguement or anything though so do it at your own risk.  ;P

When ever I have a problem like that with a girlfriend, I just move them.  Though the difference for me is that the computers are mine so they really don't get a say in which one they get to use.

There's a reason I use a trickle down method. I buy a new, better machine. My stuff gets moved there. The next best goes to whoever is currently my #2 (right now my best friend) and they often give theirs to the next down, etc., etc. Keep in mind this works cause I still have a plentitude of contact with immediate family, my bro and sis are both the working poor and my best friend does okay, but has two kids and a mortgage. The tribal councils get interesting, but only rarely is anyone voted off the island.

The trickle down affect works pretty good, except I'm on the downline :annoyed: .

I'm not ready to take the leap of moving them myself, something along the lines of "Don't poke the bear."

Haha.  Which is why I said do so at your own risk.  ;P

I'm having trouble getting this mod to work.

I installed the mod at the same time as i updated to Entrenchment 1.051 (but without rebooting). This was with the 0.9951 patch copy pasted over version 0.995. It ran just fine and I loved it: the somewhat faster pace, and the large unit scale, not to mention the greater planet variety. I subsequently rebooted my computer (i think because of a windows update). I tried to launch the game, but it would not run. I got a mini-dump error (i can duplicate it if its contents are important). The game launched just fine after I removed the mods-enabled text file. However, when I tried to enable the mod, it would freeze and mini-dump when i clicked "apply".

I've tried the following solutions: reinstalling sins; running sins as admin; redownloading and copying in the mod files; running the patch as a seperate mod over-layed on the first.

I am running windows 7 home premium 32 bit on a HP laptop:

AMD Turion TL-52 (64bit)

1gb ram

ATI X1200 (i think is an integrated chipset with no dedicated ram)

I think the problem you're running into is that the modded version of the game requires more then 1GB of ram.

Hi- I just downloaded this mod. so far its pretty awesome and im enjoying the new planet types.

however some planet skins seem to not load properly. particulary the savahnah and industrial planet skins, I think there was one more but it has slipped my mind.

any help for fixing the problem will be appreciated.

good job and keep up the good work.

You maybe have corrupt files.  Try redownloading a copy and getting rid of everything from the mod folder and starting fresh, if you have the same problem again then it may be an issue with your video card or settings.

Your RAM is what Im gonna say is the problem. Since the OS is gonna use about half of that 1 GB itself. So your having about ~500 MB of RAM. Your gonna have a very hard time playing SINS unmodded with just that. As the un modded game can use up to 2GB or more itself. The mod instanly addsto the RAM usage, since there are several different graphical mod that have to incorporated into the core of the mod.

Sorry to say, your best bet is to buy more RAM. I know its easier said than done, with many peoples budgets are tight. But RAM is fairly cheap compared to most computer parts. Your gonna wanna double at the very very very min. your current RAM.

EDIT: Stant is already on top of this. I should read the rest of the posts before responding.

But why would it load the first time and not ever again? and if so, why did the re-install not help

As an aside, I purchased Diplomacy, and I ran into almost the exact same problem: the first time i tried to to run the mod, it ran just fine. After a reboot, the mod would not load. If it was a ram issue, I would expect to see a different set of symptoms: low FPS, inconsistent loading, in-game crashes. I've seen none of these symptoms. I had typical (a far as I could tell) if not slightly improved performance in the mod compared to without.

I'm going to try running it in an optimized enivironment (few background processes).

When you reinstalled did you delete everything the uninstall process left over...aka folders etc etc etc. Its been know in the un modded game to cause problems if folders and files are left after the uninstall and  you try to reinstall.

As for why it works sometimes and this not....welcome to SINS. We had soooo many problems over the development of the mod with troubleshooting things b/c sometimes they work sometimes they dont.

It could be that first time you didnt have many things running in the background and you do now...I see thats what your thinking could be the problem also. Or it could be a bad reinstall. Or it could be SINS being stupid. It can be very stupid at times....ask Nacey. lol

I hate to be a debby downer still...but if you do get it run I doubt you can have a long good game with just 1GB. But let us know if you are still having problems...also what is checksum when you try to enable the mod.

I tried kill a bunch of processes, as well as minimizing all game options. the game definetly ran faster, but still it didn't load. I also tried deleting the cache in the local folder. didn't help. Tomorrow I'll try deleting it all and running a fresh install.

The first time I played, I actually played a full game in a 100 planet galaxy with 4 players. made it all the way to the end (well i maxed tech and units and killed everyone. Didn't need to conquer the whole galaxy). To be fair though, I'm probably more patient with low FPS's than most because I'm so used to this computer (almost three years old, and it was no stud even then).

I'm gonna have to say that when you install the game, the installer shuts down process you normally can't shut off so that it can write files to your hard drive without a hitch.  Install shield typically makes itself the highest priority thing running so it doesn't get interfered with.  When you play the mod in this state, there's enough RAM (counting the swap files of course) to play the game.  After you reboot, all of those processes shut off, or suspended, or deprioritised, or whatever, all come back to their normal state and go back to chewing up your RAM.  That's purely a guess since I'm not about to go uninstalling and reinstalling things a bunch of times just to check, but it seems the most likely reason.

At some point you have to face the facts, your little laptop doesn't even meet the minimum requirements to play the game, so count yourself lucky that you have enough of a system that you can play.

Don't even look at the recommended requirements, because that's the neighborhood I'd be looking at as minimum required to run the mod, in which case you fail severely at the graphics card and RAM levels.

Hey DS guys,

The SOP mod that everyone is raving about, does it work with the DS mod and if so, what is the check sum mod # and the order it should be placed, when I installed it first, the skybox background had a weird distortion in it. It look cool but you can tell something was wrong. And when I had at last, it just crashed and mini-dump. Thanks again for your answers. Also, finally got my main computer up and running again. Bad thing is had a great game I was working on and did not get backed up to the ext HD.

Bison.....

Currently the SOP mod is at odds with DS, we will be watching it closely and hope to incorporate it soon
