9pm EST (2am GMT)
Saturdays & Sundays

If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Lore:
We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.

Maps:
Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Please visit our website and for more information, change logs, downloads, and to report bugs. Our website can be found here: http://distantstars.mmobase.com

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

Has anyone been able to sort out the PICTURE SET's,

I have an ATI Graphics card and I believe that is why the PLAYER IMAGES appear wrong.  They are squeezed together and more than one appear in the same PICTURE CARD.

The mod sounds great and I can't wait to play it but the PLAYER PICTURE's have put me off it for now.

PLEASE if you know how to resolve this can you let me know how to fix it, and preferably in a way which still enable's me to use great NEW CHARACTER's.

THANKS

P.S. Love the Milla Jovovich one.

Correct, FAQ question 2 says it's ATI card related.  Having little to no knowledge on this issue, I'm going to say at this time no.  The reason for that is that changes in game play are a slightly higher priority then messed up card images.  Don't worry though, every effort will be made to fix the problem, you just have to be patient.

Thanks for the response Stant123, I'll look forward to that.

I have only tried this and the SG one so far, on SG the TEC image is replicated in place of the ADVENT image. So you get 2 of the same TEC images on 1 and 2, on each set of 3, the 3rd one being correct.

Do you Know if the problem with ATI is specific to certain mods.

What I'm trying to ask is... Is their a mod that I can change the player images with an ATI card and not have this problem?

Once again thanks for the update.

so I hear NovaCameron is trying to get permission from the distant stars team to use the distant stars planets in the star wars sins of a galactic empire mod.  I think they should talk to him, I really want an urban coruscant, an ocean manaan. :)

Being a modder for an entirely different game, I know you don't hear this enough...

Great job on the mod. I really appreciate a balanced, relatively bug-free, and enjoyable experience.

@David, you should probably pass this along to NovaCameron then...  The planets in Distant Stars are built in mods called Sins Plus by Uzii and Celestial Bodies by TohKlidan.  He should be asking them for permission since it's their work.  There's also the Multiple Stars Graphics Mod by Boshimi336.

For more information on on what is included in Distant Stars, you can read the main post at the top of this page, visit the mod's website, or visit the wiki.  Happy gaming.

Can I use it with the Star Wars Requiem mod?

SW Requiem already uses the celestial bodies mod, Volumetric explosions and damage mod, and sound enhancements mod that DS uses, and it's generally not advised to run the same mods twice.  You waste a lot of memory that way and things may be different between versions.

Running both big mods at the same time would probably be a very bad idea and end up crashing your game very often since DS already takes the game close to the 2gig limit, and requiem would likely easily put it over.  Plus there's also the whole issue with balancing.  Each project has put in a lot of time to balance gameplay as much as possible with their mods, and running both at the same time would break that balance and you'd end up with a unit or two or 100 that are severely over powered or so worthless there's no point in even having them.

I would say that yes you could use it with Requiem provided it doesn't crash right away from being out of memory, but you'd break your game play in the process so it's not advised.

We have tried so far to debug this one but given the fact all us play testers cant reproduce it, progress on it has slowed. Even more so, it maybe something with the Iron engine which means we cant fix it.

AFAIK, we not been contacted by anyone. Though Im sure Nova planned to use Sins Plus mod, since that is where the city and ocean planet came from. For that he need to contact whoever was left in charge of Sins Plus.

Survey says....you can try. But I doubt it will work. I can think of dozens of things that may conflict so unless you take the time to merge these mods together for your own personal use then you have to pick on or the other. Honestly I dont think they would be fun together, given what they add.

Just a quick question. Having reinstalled my PC, and thus having reinstalled Sins. I tried to download the mod again, yet the strangest thing keeps happening. Either at 100% my browser(chrome) just doesn't load any new pages (or refreshes already open tabs). I tried downloading it on my laptop and it just stops at around 8MB. Obviously Windows tells me it's corrupted. Is there any other way or location where I can download the mod?
End of quote

There are no other site to download from. We keep it where its for several reasons. We can keep stats on how much and how many have downloaded the mod. Also doesnt cost the mod team extra to host since Nacey has his own server. Lastly its much easier to update the OP and link if it just one site.

As for why its not downloading for you, Im at a loss. I just downloaded all the links no problem. It could be Chrome, have you tried either Firefox or IE for quick fix?

I tend to find the fewest conflicts with Firefox, even with a lot of security add-ons. I highly advise using it.

How would I install this for Entrenchment 1.5?

Do I need to download both .995 and .9951?  And what about the mini-mods included(like dynamic movement) are they active by default or is there another step?

Thanks.

I don't quite get how to install this mod for 1.051, in the instructions it says to install a patch but the download provided for that only includes the same files as the full download.

Sigh... Over and over again I think of anything that I could do to contribute. Don't really come up with anything though... Advertising? ;P

If you downloaded the large file where you place it in the mod folder... then all you need to do with the patch and drag and drop the files from the of the patch into the mod folder you put into the mods for Sins depending on which version you use. Or you could do what I do before I move the mods into my sins directory which is extract the file to the desktop and then apply the moving files around or replacing files.

I hope that made sense :S

If you installing the mod for the first time. Download the Full Install. THEN the patch. The patch will contain alot if not all of the same files. Reason being we may require you to delete files/folders(to get rid of older files that are broken or not used anymore) There is a README and/or DELETETHESEFIRST file you need to read. You will need to patch 0.095 to 0.0951 to play on the lastest Entrechment version.

The problem is that you say that I need to patch to 0.0951 but in neither the full download or the patch file do I see a program to do this. The readme files in both downloads only tell me where to drop the files but as they wont work without this patch being installed then I dont see what the purpose of the patch download is.

There not gonna be a program. The patch contains updated/fixed/tweaked/whatever files we changed to make it work with 1.051. You have to patch it manually. Which is as simple as dragging and dropping. And letting Windows copy over the older files.

If you read the advance instructions(the link is on the OP) it tells you how to patch the mod and install the mod.

Hey,

First I want to say great mod, I love it. Sad thing was that it would crash every 30 minutes with high settings because of the 2GB RAM issue. I solved this by using a program called "CFF Explorer" (http://www.ntcore.com/exsuite.php).

You open the desired executable (SoaSE Dip in this case) with CFF Explorer, go to the "File Header" and you'll see a sheet and at the bottom is "Characteristics" and all the way to the right of that should be a highlighted box saying "click me". When you click it another window will come up and most of them are unchecked, if you look through it one will be called "App can handle >2gb addressest" (it should be unchecked when you open it) and check that  box in, press "OK" and exit the program.

TLDR: Right click SoaSE exe> open with CFF Explorer > File Header > Characteristics (click me box) > check "App can handle >2gb addressest"

I have been playing without any crashes after this fix with all highest settings (I have used it for Fallout 3 as well). I'm also using Windows 7 x64, but I think this should work for everyone that has more than 2GB of RAM available. Enjoy :)

Although different program, I did something similar to Supreme Commander. Although it's not a true solution to the optimization problems, it does help extend gameplay and reduce lag. Probably not a bad idea for those with 5+ gigs.

Of course, I have Vista. Not sure if that option is open to me.

More specifically, you're referring to Large Address Aware which has been covered a number of times already.  In simplest terms I can think of, think of street addresses for houses.  Your house address may have 2 numbers, it may have 3 numbers, it may have 4 number, or it may have 5 numbers, possibly more.

32 bit systems and programs such as Sins recognize RAM addresses such as 6 elm street, 34 pine avenue, and 447 easy street. Then you hit your 2 gig address limit.  So everything is crammed in down in the downtown section of your RAM because those are the only address they know about and can read.  When those addresses all fill up, you've got no where to go and you crash.

However, large address aware lets programs know that there are more addresses then that.  They find themselves a nice real estate agent and they get shown that there is more then just the busy downtown addresses.  The LAA real estate agency says hey look at what we have over here, such as 7533 evergreen terrace, and 18639 park place, or even higher, and should they need the room so the little bits can play in the yard on a not so busy street, they can move there.  (everything over that 2 gig address limit)  This option will NOT work for anyone using a 32 bit OS.  The OS itself is restricted to the downtown part and will not let programs relocate to the suburbs unless it get's to as well but since it can't, it doesn't let anyone else go.  Damn communist OS.  ;P

LAA does not let the program use any more RAM then it could before, you're not moving from the downtown section to the suburbs and keeping both places to use.  When you move, you move.  You're not getting a bigger house then you had before either, you're just getting away from the clutter and cramped space of the lower downtown addresses.  LAA is not the silver bullet people want to believe it is.  While on a 64 bit OS you see improvement because the game ends up not competing for space, it's still limited in how much space it can take up.  It's a 32 bit program so it can still only use 2 gig max of RAM.  The real solution is to rewrite the executable into a 64 bit version.  Then it will use up however much free RAM your system has available.  But again, 32 bit systems gain nothing.

I like the pool metaphor better.

Oh yeah, this one...  https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/335474/page/111/#2571696

I'm just going to keep using as many different metaphors as I can until people stop recommending LAA as the solution, since it's not.  I should probably chronicle all of my metaphors on the wiki so I know which one's I've done before.  What should I use next?  Seats on a bus?
