Multiplayer Games:
We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

The times are:
4pm EST (9pm GMT) Saturdays & Sundays
9pm EST (2am GMT)
Saturdays & Sundays

If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Lore:
We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.

Maps:
Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Please visit our website and for more information, change logs, downloads, and to report bugs. Our website can be found here: http://distantstars.mmobase.com

or
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug

If you get these log files to us (you can just paste them in to a forum post) we can hopefully get your issues sorted.

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

Yeah I feel bad now, I almost forgot harpo and I just read through like 3-4 of his helpful occurrences :o sorry harpo if you read this =X...man I even Karma'd him too, how the hell'd I forget him. Anyway, wow 640 megs, maybe my comp's just moody. I'll give it another try when I've got a better understanding of what I'm gonna be trying to do, 'cause if I break this one I'm gonna have to bust my ass to save up for a new one before that grant money comes in, and 3 months seems far away when you don't make much lol (has like $20 after bills are figured out) plus, in the process of moving and the deposits are looming over me like anvils in a road runner cartoon @_@

lol $20 after bills are figured out, wow. I'm doing good to have $5. But that is life as Married with Children. There are things you can do to help your computer. You would be amazed at how many things are running on your computer that you don't need to have running. Learn what you can and cannot shutdown (you can shutdown most of the background programs but it helps to know which is which) and you will find your computer running more smoothly.

yeah I learned a bit about those like itune's auto search update BS Bonjur and about the 5 other itunes related crap that runs regardless of the program being opened or not, still don't go into the rundll to fix the problem though so that's my own fault, to gun-shy that I might halt it from working(not that I don't use it for much more than a music player now that my ipod up and stopped being compatible with my computer, that's a whole other can of worms though >.>)

lol yeah I hate iTunes, it broke my CD/DVD burner

stant, I am ONLY 47 and have been programming for a mere 32 years, and my oldest desktop has a HUGE 48Kb of ram INCLUDING the video, but my oldest laptop has a MONSTEROUS 32KB with cassette and SERIAL connected floppy drive as the ONLY storage options, but it does work on four penlight(aa) size batteries for 13(!!!!!!!) hours before I have to replace the batteries.

and stant that is one of the BEST explanations I have read about the crap LAA that keeps getting regurgitated for every new game that has customisable maps with large(more than 200) unit counts possible.

You should find one of past explanations. The comic one is great IMHO.

Well, I'm 31, so what I said was accurate.  You've been doing this longer then I've been alive and I'm not some little kid.  ;Þ

the comic was ok, but did NOT actually explain it, just trivialized it.

and as far as programming, back in the early days ALL computer hobbyests HAD to program as the only was to get programs without SPENDING hundreds (in 1980 the average weekly wage WAS only $150) was to buy a magazine and TYPE in the program listing, then debug the typo's till the program worked, and with 16kb of ram and interpreted languages it paid BIGTIME to figure out every trick to minimise ram useage both in program size AND variable count and size ie is it ESSENTIAL if not get rid of it,does it NEED decimal points, or is it really going to NEED  to go above 32767 if not integer. this is just to give you an idea of what methods I use when I write programs, and my goal with all of my programs is to have all NEEDED functions, and the functions that will help the program to work, BUT only the things needed, which is why I have not even attempted to make a merge of all of my utilities as it would be a dogs breakfast of a mess to debug AND write, inspite of all of the common code between them it would probably end up twice the size of all of my utils and slower.

lol, I remember those days of watching my dad do all that. I helped him a little. Yes harpo you are old enough to be my dad. :P

Yeah, hence thats why its funny. *shrugs* lol Simple minded I am I guess.

The comic was supposed to be more amusing then useful, and it is, so no point in changing it.  It's never solely referred to unless we have a real dumb ass on our hands who can't understand how conversation works.

Ahh yes, the good old days of programming.  I remember them fondly.  The family computer was purchased all the way back in 1982 and I used that bad boy all the way up until I left home for college in mid 1997.  So everything I did, every program I made, every game I played, had to fall within 1982 settings...  Good times.  While at college, I relied heavily on library computers which meant I updated the specs I could work with by 10 to 12 years, and in very early 2001, bought myself a brand new top of the line Pentium IV desktop from HP which upped the game for me to then present day standards and beyond.  Used it every day up until early 2009 when I just said what the hell and bought my new desktop upping my abilities once again, and now the old one sits here playing music and doing file conversions for me while I'm on the new computer screwing around playing games and modding.

I think that old '82 Sperry PC is still in my mom's garage somewhere.  Might be fun to take it apart and turn it into a fish tank or something.

lol I think my dad still has our Apple IIGS from 1987? or 1986? meh, somewhere about then

ryat, my (that I purchased with my own money and was $799 on clearance original price was $1399 for the computer screen AND cassette player) trs-80 model 1 was built in 1977, and my model 100 was built in 1981, if you are trying for a battle of the oldest working computers, if not ignore it

harpo

lol nope, tbh I think I have the youngest oldest computer in comparison with you and stant

my computer plays games.

so does my model 1 and model 100, BUT my b3 plays different games to the oldsters and with prettier graphics and sound.

My first game lead me to be a criminal...  XD  It's a weird little story.

My little brother and I would play a football game on the PC called head coach.  Got it in '84 as part of a game package called friendlyware.  Of course, me being 5 years old and my little brother being 4 at the time, we had no idea what we were doing, but hey, I learned to read because of it.  I hated to lose and so learning to read the penalty notices that popped up evened the odds between me and my older brother and gave me the virtual lock to winning rather then just leaving it up to luck of good play calling against my little brother who just accepted or declined penalties based on if I had accepted or declined the previous one on him, which ultimately made him learn to read because he hated to lose every time he played.  As a side effect I also learned all about football at a very young age and by the time I was 7 I was an expert (for a kid) on play calling and audibles and was typically asked to play with the older kids since I was just better then everyone else my age because whatever team I was on would just destroy the other one.  I'd always call a run and a pass play in the huddle and when the defense would line up I'd call out some color and number which would tell the others to run or pass against the defense I was looking at.  (Also the only time I've ever known someone besides the quarterback to be calling the plays on the field)  On defense it was kind of the same thing, call a run defense and a pass defense in the huddle, line up to match the offense, call the color/number of which I wanted to protect against more based on the offense I saw and I was usually calling the correct one.  Everyone would try to copy what I was doing, but I had a couple years under my belt of seeing what worked and what didn't so I was just better at it.

Anyway...  Sorry I've been drinking all day and it's affecting me badly right now...  I know I was 7 at the time because it was the first time I just left home and headed down to the park to play by myself because the older kids always did resulting in my mom thinking I had been kidnapped and eventually me being brought home in the back of a police car for all the neighbors to see and my ass getting beat later that night when my dad got home so bad that I had to stay home from school the next day because I couldn't sit in a chair.  They were probably afraid of child abuse calls too...  Also started swearing at the TV around that time watching the Raiders play because they did something stupid (some things never change, around that time I became a Steelers fan and actually started following a professional team religiously) but back then I'd get to remember what a belt across my ass felt like.  It never stopped me from swearing though and eventually they gave up punishing me.

I've always been popular with the girls since that day too, rumors at school on why I wasn't there the next day was because I spent the night and following day in jail after getting dragged out of the park by cops.  Chicks dig the bad boys.  ;]  And I've never not been a criminal since.  And that's how my first game made me a criminal.  =D

Hey, I just got this game and was looking at your mod.  It looked like a ton of fun so I gave it a shot.

However I seem to be hitting that 2 gig crash people talk about.  Any idea for recomended settings so I dont run into that?  Like graphics options, number of AI's, ect.

Thanks in advance.

Set everyting at medium or less and you should be fine for the most part, although plain vanilla Sins will still have that every once in a while.  There's also some work being done to reduce the system strain from the mod which will be available for the next update ... whenever that's done (*ahem* ;)

Hey I keep getting mini dumps in larger games. Can i use the The Sins Optimization Project mod to help with this or will they not work together?

Ah just noticed the post above! Will try that!

TSOP is still at odds with DS but we are currently working them together.

Yay!

A side note, I featured your mod at my last LAN party and everyone there who didn't have a copy of Sins bought one and your mod is now a standard when for our Sins Lan parties.
