The bounty System

need clarification

Hello all, me and my friend were wondering how does the bounty system works.. because so far, we often see changes in the "cash" ammount on the different players.. going down, or getting messages that they change.. but we dont know what and why it is happening. Also, there is the colored "bars" under our picture saying stuff like "low" and "guarded"..  again, what does it mean?

Somewhere i think i saw in the game that killing ships would change the bounty.. but i never saw that happening.

Is there a clear wiki article on this subject?  i didnt find anything helpfull.

also, if possible, some explanation on the link between pirates and the bounty system.. iirc the higher it is, the stronger the pirates gets.

Pirates always attack the player with the highest bounty at the time of the raid launch. The severity of the pirate force depends mostly on the amount of bounty total, but also some minor factors like the number of that player's colonies and trade ships.

The secondary effect of bounty is that it is assigned and distributed among the target player's units, buildings, and planets proportionally (so a planet will get a bigger chunk of the bounty than a teensy ship). Others attacking the bounty'd player will collect the portion of the bounty assigned to the units they destroy. You cannot collect bounty that you yourself put, however - there are several techs that deal with bounty that would leave it wide open to exploitation and getting free credits.

Not overly complicated :) Hope it helps!

Ooooh.. that does explain several.. actually, many things.. thank you!

Yeah, when you see bounty decrease it just means that player is losing ships and whoever is attacking him is pocketing the credits. Forgot to connect the last dot :)

Yeah i had figured that out, but it seems more effective when there are more players biiding against eachother,  in a 1v1 its more about controlling the pirates. Now the different warnings about change in bounty make sense.

Right there i had one heck of an epic fight againts pirates, i was constantly paying them to attack my opponent, but he was so weak (easy level, im still learning the game) that their numbers were always increasing.. when i noticed that and i got the needed forces to attack the pirates they had something around 150-200 ships in their system. Lost most of my normal fleet and one capital ship (out of 6) in that battle but i won. Fun!

End of gpompeu's quote

in the setup options menu. where you set game speed, fleet sizes etc. on the left hand side there is an option where you can turn pirates on or off.

new game - it is both at the bottom of map selection, and of player selection.

and it is "game options"

Note that the Game Options button was added in 1.03, if you're running the off-the-disk version it won't be there.
