Fighters and Bombers questions

For planetary defense, which is better on average:  Fighters or bombers?

For carriers, which is better when attacking?  Fighters or bombers?

I've been mostly building Bombers for defense, thinking cap ships will come with the invading force...but sometimes they arrive with so many fighters, that there's not much I can do.

There isnt a planetary defense vs. fighters is there?

Also, is it really worth it to upgrade the Cap carrier to bring fighters/bombers with it?  As opposed to a marza or something else with more punch?

Best bet is to swarm carriers (the cruiser ones) with close to 100% fighters. You could build your grav well full of hangars with 100% fighters but you still need carriers as well.

Fighters are not just to counter enemy fighters - they'll take out scouts, anti-planet frigates and long-range frigates as well.

Don't bombers do that, too?

wow, I thought fighters were only good vs. bombers...and with no other ability.

So they can attack ships as well?

Check the ship reference sheets - fighters are best vs. light armor, bombers vs. very heavy armor. There's a bit of a difference ;)

Fighters are pretty much the only ships in Sins that can hit any other damageable object (Bombers can hit anything except themselves and fighters).

Pokletu: Yes, bombers can take out long range frigs and scouts, but far less quickly than fighters. This is reversed when you start talking about structures, capital ships, and heavy cruisers.

What InfiniteVoisd said is good. Just look at fighters attacking a turret, then watch a bomber do it. BIG difference...

Personally, i prefer to fill my hangar defense with fighter only, so they can better counter ennemy bombers that own my turrets defenses... and being fast they can kill scouts easily.

For my fleets i usually do 2 fighters for 1 bomber

Having carriers with your fleet gives you a very mobile and effective tool (fighters and bombers) for surgical strikes, interception and anti-fighter support. Want something dead? tell them all to attack the same target. Wont live for long no matter the HP and Shields...

I dont spam carriers.. too expensive, i keep 10 at most,  i make more flak instead.

1.12 has become a carrier spam fest - with nothing but fighters being built. The battles I've had the last few days online have had over 30 fighters per player in them, sometimes closer to 50....

LOL that is completely true..... recently i played a match where i carrier spammed due to the opponent carrier spamming. I had a fleet consisted of 215 squadrons but my fleet still got out spammed by their squadrons. (i was vasari and the opponent was advent, both of our fleets consisted of over 80 % carriers)

Wow.  Another game I'm just not cut out for, online, I suppose:( .  Thanks for the direct, clear response, InfinateVoid.

Who started the fighter trend, just out of curiosity(not looking for a name; but a method).  Did someone pore over all kinds of xmls, and calculate/compare values of damage per second, or trial'n'error with a bazzillion games to come to the winning conclusion?

I've always played, up untill now, against Normal AI, and have always(after the learning curve) come out on top.  Playing against tougher AI, will they adopt those(fighter spamming) tactics, or just get more aggressive, or something?

Funny, those games, for me, have ALWAYS had ALL of my hangar defense with BOMBERS, and MY FLEETS, TOO!!  My one Sova Carrier contains fighters, just as "tokens", actually...  Since the AI NEVER uses strike craft, I never build flak frigates.

Next game, I definately gotta try the fighter approach.  Taking Hiatus, currently, until they tone the mines down to a fun level, again.

Carrier spam emerged, I think, out of attempts to balance the game and prevent other types of spam. Where as cyclic balancing attempts might change the type of ship used in a spam, the general impetus of the spam won't be solved until the economy and infinite resources are addressed. All that will happen is that as/if the devs fiddle with ship stats, different ships will become the choice for a spam until the next balancing attempt.

Just a hint freaktong, don't try matching the a smaller number of Vasari fighters against Advent fighters. Vasari have stronger fighters that deal more damage, but the Advent have many more fighters per squadron, so your stronger ships are swarmed by many more fighters.

So the question is is this spam any worse the the older spams? I would like to see more effect flak again.  Just up the flak power and don't touch anything else.

I only play offline,

If I fight agaist a fleet its all fighters.  If its structers I add some bombers in.  I do also run some bombers if there fleet is not overly spammed.

But for you online guys I would assume fighters are the norm.

I don't really view one spam as worse than any other; they are all just as annoying as each other. All I can do is just put up with spams and remain bitter that the reason for them was a gameplay change made during beta.

Hi all:

Since 1.12, I have seen many players spamming carriers.  So far, I have a lot of success against carrier spammers by building a balanced fleet.  As an Advent player, my fleet consists of a Progenitor leading illuminators (with orders to chase enemy carriers) protected by guardians, with another group of carriers led by a Rapture with concentration aura.  If the game stretches to destra stage, I usually add a Carrier Cap ship as well for the push ability (giving it a bit of anti-fighter dam).  I think my success comes from being more cost efficient.  For the resources of 1 carrier, I can build 2 illuminators (But most of the time, you are limited by resources instead of credits so I usually think of 1 carrier as 3 illuminators).  The damage output should be larger for a balanced fleet.

By the way, I agree with the carriers/fighters bit.  So far, I focus mostly on fighters, doing about a 2/1 ratio of fighters/bombers.

Cheers.

Bombers can hit fighters, but you wouldn't liek the results.
