What Does Everyone Think of "Sword of the Stars"?

Hi,

I recently came across this title online, and thought i would ask what everyone thinks of it, it seems alot like Sins, except perhaps a little older and less graphically sophisticated. But it does look nice, but wanted to ask too, how does it play? I guess i mean, how is it different than Sins?  And is there a storyline? Or ships that get progressively stronger or different? Are there factions or races? Does it mean building and controlling fleets or starting with one ship? Does the player do different things? I guess i mean, could i be a miner? And like spend weeks mining and building a small company or buying ships or things like that?  Haha, lots of silly questions i guess, but i know nothing about it except what i have seen on YouTube and some links. Just thought i would ask.

THanks for the input, take care and keep gaming and keep modding!!!

Sword of the Stars is good.  After the two expansions it is better than Sins.  If you didn't know, it is a turn-based 4X with real-time combat.

There are originally four races, and each expansion adds a new one, plus new techs and gameplay features.  The latest one even adds fighters}:) .  Unlike Sins, each faction feels and plays vastly different from each other even though like in any 4X all races have a very similar tech tree.  Not to mention there are some totally kickass mods.

There is a storyline, but really only a storyline in the sense Sins has a storyline.  You will not care at first, but once you get involved and read the stuff on its forums, especially the various racial stuff, you will be hooked since there is so much more background and fluff than in Sins.  SotS is much, much more immersive than Sins.

Oh yeah, its way better than Sins.  Kiedjor and I were going to make a Sword of the Stars mod for Sins, but decided that because of engine limitations it would suck.  Hard.  Well, I decided and never told him.  Yes, it would be cool.  Would it feel like Sword of the Stars?  Not really since everyone would have exact same drive techs and the lack of Newtonian physics in Sins would make battles bland and boring.  Yes, SotS has realistic physics and dynamic battles.  Tactics will bring you victory in SotS.

Too bad their ships look like toys :P.

I think SotS is a great game. The new features in the two expansion packs make it worthwhile to get those aswell.

Your opinion. Metacritic has it rated 20 points below Sins.

Personally, I couldn't stand having to manually handle fuel supplies, and the combat was incredibly difficult to control; no matter what I tried to do the ships just ended up flying at and past each other like jousting knights until one landed enough potshots to destroy the other. It's certainly no Master of Orion.

:(    Hmmmm.....  downloaded the demo and got it to run, but the graphics are very old style. It is a turn based game and it has been a while since i played those. I'm not entirely sure this is my cup of tea, but i liked the idea of fuel and different approach, and i really like being able to design your own ships and upgrading or changing out the weapons or engines. I wish Sins had some of that. Being able to upgrade a sublight engine to say a warp engine, or a 2xwarp engine to speed up phase lane jumping. Or to exchange cannons for beams or vice versa. And i like the change in appearance that comes with changing those options, tankers are completely different than scouts. Anyway... it looks interesting but it looks like im going to have a bit of a learning curve getting used to how it plays.  Haha, anyway, all in all, it would be interesting to look at the other expansions as well and see how that changes things.

Thank you for all the input,

Well, it does have a learning curve, especially compared to Sins.  It is a full turn-based 4X game where you have to manange population numbers, morale, your fleets, your research, everything needs a lot more micro than Sins.  However, along with all that comes the ability to do a whole lot more than in Sins.
