How to board..I think I have an idea how to!

So I'm still working on my two mods (Nephils and the Dome) and I had the idea of adding some sort of "boarding ability" to one of my ships...now before you all screama t me telling me its not possible hear me out THEN scream at me if you dont agree....

1) So basicaly, the boarding ability would be an active ability with a range of 100 (the boarding part as in with 100 your ship need to effectively ram the other ship in order to activate.

2) Upon touch, you would have a DoDamage for BOTH ships (attacker and defender, though the attacker being designed for that will suffer LOT less).

3) adding a "OnChance" buff with like 20% probability that it will trigger a "domination buff" which will give you control over the ship. Also adding a temporary 'negative buff' (which will cause lower  speed, attack damage, etc.) for a brief period to represent your troops 'get to know the ship' time.

4) Also adding a 60% "on chance" buff saying that the ship will "scuttle" (ie. read dead) BUT that you will salvage some resources out of it!

5) Third, add a 10% chance that ship boarding has failed in which case the attacker would lose CONSIDERATE damage and the defender would give continue the battle.

6) And finally with those last 10%, add the worst case scenario, boarding ignites the defender destroying it and dealing MASSIVE damage to attacker!

Now questions..cus yes, I can individually do all those abilities and buffs..but how to add them together (turns to annatar or kitkun?) Any insight on easiest way to go (I tend to go long way all the time) for it to be most effective?

Thanks to all,

Unfortunatelly, I am not a modder. But it sounds really great! I hope the guys from Ironclad read this and can help you on it! Or some other modder. That's why I try to bump your post! Good luck! Boarding parties...

Is there an OnChance trigger? I don't recall seeing one, but I might have missed it.

Anyway, there is no way of arranging the buffs so that triggering one buff excludes triggering all others. You can chain a few of them together, but sooner or later you would need to have an OR relationship established between various results, which to my knowledge cannot be done with the buff system. It only supports AND relationship.

One way you could do something simmilar is to have an OnChance (if it exists) trigger with 90% sucess that the boarding suceeds, and then have all other effects invoked... 10% chance of considerable damage to both ships, 10% chance of the defender being destroyed and the attacker receiving damage, 60% chance of scuttle and finally 20% chance of actually gaining control of the ship. But this could have unexpected results, such as you getting control of the ship and it being scuttled, or both 10% chance effects taking place.

My advice is to keep it as simple as possible.

If this works out properly it would be ace for the BFG mod. Gothic 40k asides, boarding actions would make for an interesting change up in tactics. Give 'em to kodiaks and watch them wreak chaos in an opposing fleet. Anyways, success or not kudos for laying down a potential framework for its application.

End of ManSh00ter's quote

Yes the OnChance trigger IS possible as I have used it for various skills inclusing my artillery (40% chance of hitting only) and Sniper ship (40% chance of instantly killing a ship)!

So Yes ManShOOter it is completely possible to add 'OnChance' now as for simplicity, well the sort of advice I was looking for cus I had the same conclusion as you (cant stop all onchance actions) so I'll have to make an order +_+

Should be fun, REAL fun to do! ;)

Glad to be able to help numerous people!

Would boarding be with boarding ramps or with the ship that is boarding sending out little ships full of people in them? It would be like the animation of colonizing another ship!

Yes image I would take would be the well the effect of the colonising ability..ie. YES the little ships being sent out to another one!

But if someone experiene with particle forge or what not wants to create a boarding effect! SURE bring it on!!!

If you want, you can also add a requirement that the target ship's shields need to be down (which makes sense in its own right). I did that for my boarding ability when I was messing around with Star Trek stuff. :P

I have a Ship Steal effect for the Pirates.

Add a "With entry Vehicles line" to it, and it will shot Entry vehicles at the enemy ship!!

AWESOME! well shall I put mod on stand by and rush to make boarding actions +_+? 'cus if Annatar doesnt say its not possible means its good +_+

Well, within the bounds that ManSh00ter laid out, yeah.

I'm starting work on it officially as of......................."takes deep breath"...NOW!

lol! Like ManShOOter said, I'll take it simple to start and try to expand as it works out!

My best advice is don't overdo it on secondary effects. It either succeeds or it doesn't, that's probably enough. I could imagine trying to make it something super-fancy if it could only be done on capitals, but if you're allowing it on frigates nobody's going to notice the small debuffs. :P

well could make two variants...one for frigates with very high chance of succeding and one on caps with low chance and the chance pf blowing up?

tha sound good?

Well put the ability on standby until I get home cus at university, pcs are too damn crappy (so is my laptop..)..windows xp suddenly Vista looks like god!

So I'll finish in a short while then go home and work on it (plus Im not working on latest mod version so I got old crap abilities..) PLUS teacher talking in background trying to tell people what a pc and memory card is..even funnier now hes telling them how to upload files ;)
