gravity well and local area

The  tactics management option allows for movement withing the "gravity well" and "local area".

What is the definition of the gravity well, and the local area?

Thanks!

"Gravity Well" allows ships to auto-attack targets anywhere in the gravity well. "Local area" only allows targets in the.. local area (to the ship's current position) :P I don't know the exact range, but probably around 1/5 to 1/4 of the grav well or so. "Hold Position" only auto-attacks targets that move into range.

I play with the tactical grid on.  I was thinking that the local area would be everywhere where there is the grid (that you can build structures in).  There is a small area outside of the grid where you are allowed to build....

I'm assuming that the gravity well is the entire area around the planet....outside of the gravity well are the space lanes, right?

Is there a designation for the area outside the grid, but before the space lanes?

You're thinking too hard :) The entire area around a planet is the gravity well. So when you jump in, any object is valid for auto-target on the grav well setting. Local Area is just within some range from the ship.
