Optimizing SOASE to your specs

This is not really a guide to optimizing the game, but more of a question.

I've got a 1.53 Ghz Dual-core computer with 1Gb of RAM and 128 mb RAM ATI 1150 Express video card. Now, when playing the game on a small maps (1v1 maps) my computer runs this game without ANY lag on highest settings. However, when playing a map with 10 players and over 50 planets, this game really is giving my computer a hard time. The interesting thing however, is that setting all effects to low instead of highest didn't really boosted the framerate up.

My question is:

Besides the low to highest effects settings, which of the boxes that you can tick on or off in the effects screen make for a beter framerate, while still having a decent amount of graphics?

Or in other words: While still having the effects on highest, which of the boxes should I tick on or off to have a better framerate?

It's not likely so much a matter of effects, even though the integrated video is going to be a bit weak. More likely it's just the amount of "stuff" in memory at once. The devs have made a lot of improvements to the game's memory management in Entrenchment so that the late game is now much smoother on any machine.

I think its more the overhead of running the galaxy than graphics, though having several hundred fairly detailed ships and lots of parcticles can have an effect.  I am not sure if the game is optimized for dual core.  I have same issue, have amd 4600+ dual core (2.4gh), 2 gig ram, ati 4850 vid card.  the gfx settings have basicallyno effect, cept lower qualities use less RAM for textures

So the Entrenchment install makes the game run smoother even with the new objects?

That would be great news, because I'm planning on buying SOASE in March, uptill now I've been playing an install of which the key is already in use because I said the owner I wasn't planning any online play so I borrowed his install CD. If Entrenchment would actually make the game run smoother, then I'd be totally up for it!

That seems to be the verdict, yup.
